At what age did your child start talking? I am worried cuz my nephew will be 2 yrs old in August and has not said one word. Unfortunately, his parents don’t seem too worried about this and they thing he will eventually pick up words.
Re: For ppl with children
Children are always saying something. At 2 generally speaking they have a vocabulary of around 35~50 words but those words include mama, eat, sit, etc.
You shouldn't be too concerned if he hears everything right and can understand things around him. For example, if you call him does he respond?
Re: For ppl with children
No - he doesn't respond to his name. But he has 2 nicknames so maybe he is just confused. But he does respond to other noise so I think he can hear ok. I was worried because i think his vocab is like 2-3 words (ie. ma, da, nano) and that is it.
Re: For ppl with children
dont worry about it, children in our family start speaking before they are a year old but my nephew didnt say a wordtill he was over 2 years old. We found out that he got that from his father’s side, none of my BIL’s siblings spoke till they were like 3. When my nephew started saying a few words we were all like ab bole paRa hae ab speed lagay gi and he will catch up, lekin humara sher abhi tak khayber mail ki tarha slow chal raha hae, so much so ke when he migrated to canada, his cousins, who didnt know much urdu started speaking urdu with him, ke ye tou seekhe ga nahi, hum hi seekh letay haiN.
lekin last time I spoke to him he spoke to me in English. ‘I am fine thankyou, how are you?’

Re: For ppl with children
From a Behavioral Science Text
A 2 year olds skill area:
motor skills: kicks a ball, balances on one foot for 1 second, stacks six blocks, feeds self with fork and spoon
social skills: shows negativity (i.e. the favorite word is "no"), plays along side but not with another child ("parallel play": 2-4 years of age)
verbal and cognitive:
-uses about 250 words
-speaks in 2 word sentences and uses pronouns (e.g. "me do" )
-names body parts and objects
phew Okay these are standardized, but he should be responding to his name by this age. Have you guys spoken to his pediatrician?
Re: For ppl with children
Noor was talking when she was 8 months old. She was using words like mama and dada and also creating her own words that she had assigned to specific people and things.
The situation is different for each child. It's not entirely out of the norm for a child to speak after the age of 2 or, in some cases, even after 3.
Re: For ppl with children
Highly variable. My children started talking at age of 9 months. My niece is 11 months and cay say Sura Ikhlaas, while his father was not speaking till the age of three.
However language is not the only thing, development shud be assessed overall.
Re: For ppl with children
May be the child is in multi langual environment.
Re: For ppl with children
my son, soon to be two, speaks very good....
has quite a lot of words in his vocabulary and can make sentences out of them too....
my nephew, almost 6 months (or more) older than my son, will still not talk....
he says just a few words and will speak only using single words....
no exact age at which they start speaking....
some start speaking as late as 3 years....
Re: For ppl with children
My son who is three years old, started talking like baba, ball, mama before he was 1 yr old. So we were quite happy that he'd start talking very quickly now. But still, he doenst make sentences on his own, like other kids of his age do.
It made me worried in the beginning, but what I understood was that he's confused between english and Urdu at this stage. He was watching english programs all day while we talked in Urdu. We moved to UAE last year, and this year he started pre-school. There the teachers only talk in English. So, he can understand everything, english and Urdu both. Also can make small sentences like "come here, do this" but doesnt talk much like big senteces. He makes his point clear, by using half sentence or words. But I am still waiting when he'll start talking like a chatter box.
Normally, i have heard, girls start talking much earlier than boys. but I have also seen boys who started making sentences and even conversation bfore they were 2 yrs.
It also depends on the environment and the company. Children learn very fast if they have the company of older children around them. They pick up things very quickly.
Our son is the only child at home, and even when we were in Pakistan his cousins were quite older than him. So I guess, that's a big factor.
Re: For ppl with children
Anam started talking when she turned 3 n a half.
Before that she would just point to things whenever she wanted smthing.
Choti started talking as soon as she realized she could use her mouth to talk besides chewing on things.

Re: For ppl with children
Ruiner....please don't worry specially when the parents of your nephew are not. I can tell you from my experience.....my eldest spoke his first words when he was over 2 n half years.....!!! And all that time everyone around me kept asking questions as whats wrong with him. I know all these ppl are his first relations n they were worried n sincere....but as a mother it was HARD on me. He is my eldest.....n all those ppl asking question about his verbal skills made me feel really really down.
When everyone kept insisting ...i even went to visit an audiologist too in pakistan...who i reckon was not a very nice man....as he suggested my son is partially deaf (Allah forbid) n needs hearing aid permanently......I ca,me back to germany n got him checked again ....n there was NO problem with hearing.
Khair....the bottomline is....as long as he can hear properly, he will inshaAllah talk....but at his own pace.
Re: For ppl with children
I dont know about Canada but in the US there is a federal program called Early Intervention which is for children under the age of three who may have any kind of developmental delay (ie., speech, gross or fine motor, etc) They do detailed evaluations and if its determined that there is a delay, the program provides whatever therapists are needed to overcome and work on the problem. All at no cost to the parents. I've used this program for my oldest and now for my youngest, both of them were speech delayed. The earlier the problem is recognized and treated, the easier it is to overcome. So whenever there's a doubt, its best to have it checked out. The vast majority of kids are talking by the age of 2, much more than your nephew. My 2 yr old, the youngest, had about 12 words on his birthday and we knew he was delayed. He started therapy 2 months ago and is now talking in short sentences. Its very hard to accept a problem with your little one but it is greatly in their best interest to take the first steps.
