For People Who Have Gone Through University

The Game Posts A Request:

*I just started my first year of university. Before that, I actually took a break from my workplace and will be going back in 2 weeks just to work part time (15 hours a week or so). However, I still have this dilemma; should I keep working or should I quit just to concentrate fully on studies? I have asked so many students about whether they found time during their university years to work, and they said it was manageable. Now I want someone who actually got good grades in university and worked at the same time to give me some insight into how I can manage it. I'll appreciate replies by students who actually worked hard and did well in university (Gupshup consists of many such individuals MashAllah), and not the shmucks who partied their way through :) . jerzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz kuri is an example ask her

wat u studying i start my first year in oct ...2nd :p

Its manageable. When you become a senior, then drop the work hours cause the coursework gets more demanding.

The first 2 to 3 years of college are quite manageable with a fulltime job and a full load of classes(12 credit hrs)

not a good idea to get a job as a freshmen, get used to the work, get used to university, at least for the first semester..then do whatever u want.

i've been workin pretty much throughout univ consistently...learned a few things...most importantly, if u want to get good grades, and continue workin, make a schedule and stick by it...

general rule of thumb, to get good grades, u need to put in atleast twice the amount of time for each subject as the lecture time for it...i.e. if for math, u have a 3 hr lecture each week, u have to put in atleast 6 hrs/week urself AFTER the lectures, goin over the stuff that was covered and tryin out examples...some courses will be more demanding than others, some will be easier...if u r good @ math, then instead of spending 6 hrs, u might only need to give it 3, and use the left over time for another subject which requires more effort on ur part...but yea, thats the general rule of thumb to get good grades...spending atleast twice the amount of the time req for a lecture, studyin on ur own for each subject...if u have a full course load (depending what prog), min u have 15 hrs/week (not including labs and tutorials)...that would mean spending 30 hrs on ur own each week as well...so thats a total of 45 hrs/week studyin...labs tutorial etc will require extra time as well :)

given all of that, 15 hrs/week for work is managable...it takes a lil gettin used to...but its not that bad...it's just the first couple of weeks...u'll have lil time to spare until u manage to adjust properly to those studyin and workin habits...but once thats in place, u will find time slots where u can go out with friends etc and enjoy :)

hope that helps! and best of luck :)

I guess it depends upon the individual and also the need for cash and how much of it(cash) do you need to survive and go to school. Always ask for Allah(swt)'s help in everything. May Allah(swt) help you in your endeavours - Ameen

Game, its possible to work, get good grades and party, all at the same time. Time mgmt and discipline is what is needed.

give working a try...

you'll never be studying more than a certain number of hours in a day anyway...u'll be hanging out with friends, chilling during the rest of the time anyway...so working will prolly not take away from ur studying time...

but thats important too to unwind...

i'm just saying work coz i found that i used to be more disciplined even abt studies when i used to work as opposed to when i dint...

and some extra cash to spend n feeling of earning doesnt hurt either... :-)

give it a try and see how it goes...if u dont like it, then quit...

good luck with college...

The Game Responds:

*Thank you all. I will give it a try, and if it doesnt go the way I want it, I will quit. No need to get tense about it, I guess. People, That Is All.*
