Apologies if I came/come across as rude, but the question was sincere.
I cannot grasp the idea that people would actually consider the idea that water running over your body will cause air to enter it from somewhere ......unspecified.....
From where would it enter? The skin?
Perhaps the O2 from the H2O ... but thats chemical splitting of compounds. Thats only possible in labs.
Is it just showering or will immersing body in water also have the same effect? What if you run water over your legs only? And for how long does the shower have to run?
Dipping a finger in a glass of water -- is that inclusive in the definition?
Maybe thats not enough. Will keeping my index finger in a glass of water for 6 hrs equate to the gas imbibement of a 20 min shower?
Where would the air go -- vessels? arteries or veins? Is it air embolism we are talking about? I know more than 20 ml of air in vessels can lead to death. That can happen during childbirth where air can leak into vessels in the uterus.
Or when blood is drawn improperly from veins. Neither causing ballooning as far as I know.
But if the body bloats up -- we must be talking about a space where gases can hang out. Like some big compartment. A big gas tank. Or some falthoo organ heretofore undiscovered.
In the skin? Subcutaneous tissues? Between fascia and muscle? I know the gastrointestinal system contains gases --air from swallowing -- and gases from break down of food. Maybe the stomach balloons up and thats why you look bloated.
Wait no....if only the stomach bloats up, only your abdomen will appear swollen ... bloating of body by definition implies the whole body. (Did the adults specify?). That would include arms and legs. And face too. Do the fingers swell up as well?
Gas entering the body thru skin ... thats a breakthrough.
If the Indus valley civilisation was so advanced, it would still be around today.
I don't trust the medicinal beliefs of a civilisation that wasn't smart enough to survive!

My dear-
Every civilization which rises, declines. look at history. Although the cities of Indus civilization were abandoned around 1800 BC, a number of villiage cultures arose which continued the Indus Valley Civilization traditions, thus in essence a small bank of the Indus knowledge still exits but not in its glory.
anyways, I was reading the latest issue of the Yoga Journal last night, which had an article called "Eat Right to Ease PMS". FYI, the following are some foods to *avoid: "refined carbohydrates and sugar-filled foods, such as breads and desserts * b/c they disrupt blood-sugar levels causing fatigue and mood swings. Also, sodium contributes to bloating and breast tenderness, while non-organic dairy products and meats contain hormones that cause inflammation and thus worsen cramps and bloating."
Consumption of such foods as Soy, vegetables and fruits, and nuts and seeds help to balance the homonal imbalance due to menses. Many studies have shown that** a low fat, vegetarian diet which inclues legumes and whole grains **helps keep PMS to a minimum.
Bottom line, eat right and be healthy, u should have less problems! Here's to good health. cheers!
hey hi Muni …sorry darling for not answering earlier but have been very busy lately. Well to your query, my mom said somethings to avoid, I forget some of them, but they were hot things like dry fruit, meat. I will ask her once more and my add it over here. It is intereesting what you wrote, I do beleive that old medicine has a lot of potentials.
As to my original query, well I don’t know if they meant that washing with water would fill in air or if water can get inside you while err um washing your area, but I have heard female say that you can get fat by it. By fat I mean your tummy will swallow and your body will feel like a baloon. Well anyway I don’t know if true or not, but during my PMS I don’t take bath where you have to sit in water, but I do take showers, which will not result in water getting in.
you know how it is, true wisdom always gets diluted by myths. Perhaps people were thinking of bloating and decided that if they stopped taking baths they would have less water retention... so don't believe it, its all nonsense! Hygiene is of utmost importance. Just eat right and exercise and you'll be as good as new!
I believe in ayurveda, and the more research that is being done shows the chemical compounds to have tremendous impact on the medical conditions it is designed to deal with.
