I wouldn't call myself involve with NP's but i have been very interested in them for about 3 or so years. It started from when one of my friends got a job with an NP which was very well paid position and that's where i realize that NP's are not a bad place to be looking for a job, specially in this economy as in 2006 when i first started to think about getting a job in a NP company i had a feeling a a recession or bad period of economic growth is around the corner as job market would have had a good 3 year upward movement from late 2004 -- mid 2007 and a downward period is inevitable. So i started looking at my options and during my job search i spent a lot of time looking into NP's, HealthCare, etc etc and had a few very good offers from them.
One of the most common misconception that people have is that NP's are not financially very strong, which might be true for a very small level NP but most of them have very good amount of funding available to them as they get a lot of their funding from Federal Govt, State and Private Donors. To give you an example i was offered a position by a NP in DC which for some personal reasons i was not able to accept but a week later i was given another offer by them in which they told me that they will add something more than IT work for me and raised my annual base pay by almost 40% more than what they offered in start. So based on my experience and my observations of this economy, i will definitely suggest NP as one of the places they should be looking for job, it is more than worth trying.
I do not know anything about how things work in Canada but i am sure there must some people here on GS who are from up there and should be able to provide you with some info. on health policy related opportunities.
