For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

Thank you guys for your advice and here is the end result. Not the way i expected but its not bad for the 1st try! I had to delete something off the pic but i was impressed by my steady hand…hehe..

I had HUGE probs with the fondant - I bought a book from Amazon and its called international school of cake decorating and followed a receipe from there for the fondant. It consisted of 870g of icing sugar, 2 tbs of lemon juice, 2 tbs of water and white butter. Heat the lemon juice with water and butter and add 2 cups of sugar. Mix thoroughly and take it off the heat and slowly add the sugar while mixing it. Had a hard time mixing it as it was getting stiffer and stiffer. I think i added all the sugar and it become very very dry and VERY crumbly. At this point i was feeling guilty that i have wasted so much stuff so heated the whole thing again in a big pot until it was slightly gloopy and added 2 tbs of glucose (just thought it might help) - then took it off the heat again and added more sugar and kneading hard. Well in the end i gave up as it was getting crumbly again! So the blue icing you see here is actually shop bought!

Today i went to the supermarket and saw some veg gel (i guess gelatine) so i bought 2 boxes - i hope to try the sugar paste which is made of gelatine and glucose, sugar and couple mre ingredients.

SGC - I cant find halal marshmellows in our area so i cant try your recipe but the icing on the robot cake its amazing - wish mine had turned out like that!

Can you guys help with the fondant recipe please - another easy one which will give the shop bought consistency and has a nice sheen to it. Also when i placed the fondant icing on the cake, it starting cracking on the corners…didnt know how to cover the square cake…as you can see some marks on the cake where it says " v Luv U"…

Your comments/suggestions would be much appreciated as i have to bake the final cake for my friend soon inshallah for this wkend.

Re: For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

The cake looks amazing!! Seriously, I am impressed.

One thing I wanted to let you know is that when you add colour to fondant, it makes the fondant more soft and stretchy. That is probably why it has slight tears in the corner. I found this happens to my fondant a lot whenever I add lots of colour to it.

When you cover a cake with fondant, start working from the opposite end towards you. Cup the sides, from the opposite end and gently turn the cake wards you. I’m sorry, you know, I am definitely not describing this properly. I will try and find a video for you online that shows you how to do it. It’s best to get a visual.

For fondant, I buy ready-made fondant from McCall’s. I’ve never tried making it from scratch and probably never will … way too much hard work. :stuck_out_tongue:

Other than that, good job! :k:

Thank you x

Thank you HNK x

Sazzie - Glad you like it!

Thank you so much Mehnaz - After reading your post, i do remember reading somewhere that adding too much colour will make the fondant more softer and will be difficult to handle…although it was while i was kneading the colour and rolling it out - i guess it was stretching. But then i remember i was pulling it too to cover the corner of the cake.

Anyway please post the link asap so i can learn for the 2nd cake that i am about to attempt.

Also, no one could believe that i made this esp my sis in law…haha…i told i got it from the bakery in honour of our son and she would beleive me. I HAD to convince her - it tasted great too…

Lets hope it turns out this good for my friend inshallah.

Re: For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

Also, how thick should a rolled fondant be to cover the cake? I have bought 1kg fondant dough just incase my sugarpaste fondant recipe doesnt work out...

Re: For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

looks amazing :). what kind of cake and filling did you use? can you post the recipe please?

Check out this link:

ok fondant thickness …

Roll it out on a mat. It shouldn’t be so thin that the fondant becomes see-through … but it also should not be so thick that your guests will feel like they are biting/eating pure sugar. I think the consistency in your first cake is good.

Good luck!!

1 kg of fondant is good for at least 6-8 cakes, I would think. 8" cakes.

If you don’t have a round baking pan, you should get one. I love making round cakes as opposed to square cakes.

Re: For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

i can’t see it!!! wahhhh :frowning: i don’t even see an “x” to click on sob

dude, that sucks about the marshmallows! that fondant works really well.
you could try buying readymade fondant by Wilton from Bulk Barn too.

fondant should be about 1/8th of an inch thick for covering, and what really helps is getting a cake turntable. that way as you place the fondant on, you simply rotate the turntable and mold the fondant using your hands and light pressure.

Re: For Amor Amor, SGC & Mehnaz - the cake that i made as per my previous thread!

ok i just saw it using another browser- and WOW!! good job, lady! looks like the fondant worked out for you just fine. i would recommend icing your cake smoother to avoid any bumps under the fondant, and the bump on the top of the cake? you can work it out using your hands- just pat it down. pretend you’re using play-doh- fondant is exactly the same but edible.
good job on the ribbon! i’d suggest using a white for the lettering as it’ll be a bit more visible. you can also buy alphabet cookie cutters or fondant cutters from bulk barn and cut your letters out of white fondant and place them on the cake using a bit of your icing as the glue.
overall though, two thumbs up!!
don’t forget to level the cake also before icing it- i.e. take off the top arc-bump type portion of the cake with a long, sharp knife so that it provides a level surface. then flip the cake upside down so that the bottom that was in the pan is now the top of your cake. this will ensure a perfectly smooth “poreless” surface that will be easier to ice.
