Footballers accused of gang rape in Park Lane hotel

Footballers accused of gang rape in Park Lane hotel](Latest news & breaking headlines | The Times and The Sunday Times)

A TEENAGER who claims that she was gang raped in an incident involving eight Premiership footballers at one of London’s leading hotels was interviewed by police yesterday.
The girl, 17, says that she was attacked in a £200-a-night room at the five-star Grosvenor House hotel overlooking Park Lane. She is understood to have told police that she consented to sex with one of the players, but that** seven others from another club — including an international and a number of well-known players — then entered the room. At least two are alleged to have raped her, and the girl is also said to have complained that she was subjected to another serious sexual offence. **

A spokesman for the hotel said: “We can neither deny nor confirm that any incident took place here.” During the day, however, detectives sealed a third-floor room and took away a king-size bedspread and a number of glasses.

The teenager made her accusation 12 hours after the alleged attack when she went with a male friend to Marylebone police station in Central London. She told officers that she had agreed to go to the Grosvenor House after meeting some of the footballers in a West End nightclub. Yesterday she was interviewed by detectives from Scotland Yard’s Operation Sapphire unit, which investigates rape and serious sex assaults.

A report on the interview and her statement will be reviewed by a senior commander. Detectives will also study film from closed-circuit television cameras, which would show who was in the hotel at the time of the alleged attacks.

Investigators will be urged to tread cautiously after the collapse of the prosecution of the television presenter John Leslie and the case of Christine and Neil Hamilton, who were falsely accused of rape.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We can confirm that the Metropolitan Police Service has received an allegation of rape from a 17-year-old female. At this stage it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

No players have been named by the police and the football club, which cannot be identified for legal reasons, said: “We are not making any statement at all.”

The club’s chairman arrived at the training ground before the players yesterday for talks with the manager, who is one of the most respected figures in the sport. One fan waiting outside said: “I come here regularly and I have never seen the chairman come down to the training ground. The players looked concerned. They would normally stop for a chat and to sign autographs, but there was none of that today.”

None of the club’s players commented as they left the training ground. When one star player, who is linked by rumour to the alleged incident, was approached at his home and asked whether he had any comment, he replied simply: “Nice one.”

An agent who represents a number of the footballers said: “There is nothing I can say about this, for obvious reasons.” He added that some of the players would consider legal action if they were identified. “People have to be very careful with the names they are bandying about, particularly with the name of the most prominent player.” The Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association also declined to comment.

The assault is alleged to have taken place in the early hours after the players had been to a bar and a nightclub in Central London. But the examination of the hotel room is understood to have yielded no evidence that would support the girl’s claims. There is also concern among police at the delay before the teenager made her allegation. The girl is understood to have been offered counselling and asked whether she wished to undergo an HIV test.

Operation Sapphire was established two years ago to deal with sexual offences across London, and the girl’s case is being investigated by a team based St John’s Wood.

Having been interviewed at length yesterday, she is expected to be seen several more times before any decision is taken to interview the players allegedly involved.

Mark Stephens, a solicitor who has represented a number of celebrity clients, said he believed that the names of those allegedly involved will leak out and that the Attorney-General may act to warn the media about possible prejudicial reporting. “Anyone being investigated will be going to see their lawyers,” he said. “You have got celebrity, sex and violence. It is going to be huge and the Attorney-General understands that.”

He said that if the footballers were guilty, they would face at least five years in jail. Aiding and abetting rape carries a penalty of two to three years in jail.

Yeah i heard about this - there are rumours flying left right and centre as to who it is but obviously speculation won’t help matters. Anyhow if they did do it then i don’t reckon they should be treated any differently just as they are Soccer stars - anyhow let’s wait and see how things unfold.

:smokin2:

IF that's true, then that's truly horrible and sick.

Will Gupshup get sued if I tell everyone that the alleged rapists were from Newcastle United, and the main bloke being questioned is Kieron Dyer?

Woops a daisy :p

(on a more sporty note, can Newcastle's season get any worse!)

Yes. It can get a lot worse if it does turn out to be Kieron Dyer and co. And going by past history I wouldn't put it past them. Olivier Bernard was cleared of a rape charge last season. Oh well...at least we know Sir Bobby wasn't involved. At least I hope not.

Bless Bobby tho. Newcastle had millions knocked off their stock/share thingy when the story was first leaked. They then started up a rumour that ol’ bob was about to resign in order to offer an explanation for the fall in share prices (and to try to hide the fact that half their A team were being accused of raping some 17 year old kid).

Imagine if the rape claim is true and the players end up being locked up, what will the team do? Maybe we (Villa) can sell off some of our useless baboons (cuz let’s face it, judging by our recent form, Newcastle will be the only team desperate enough to buy any of ‘em  )

You should switch sides and join Blues.

It will be very tough on Newcastle if the rumours are true, but if they commited the crime they have to face the music.

:snooty: Blue’s luck will run out soon and Villa will regain their rightful position (4th in the league table). Talent always wins.

Sigh, I remember those days when Villa would end every season in 4th place (now we’re lucky if we peak at number 15 :frowning: )

Incidentally, there's every chance that this is a false charge and the case will collapse like Bernard's did last year. If that happens I hope that girl gets nailed to the wall. Newcastle are still a top side packed with fantastic players. They are about to rocket up that league table back where they belong as long as things off the pitch don't over-take events. I predict a crushing win over Southampton on Saturday who will wish they'd never crossed the Tyne.

^ Such a sad state of affair. Xtremeo’s reply clearly shows that the only people to lose out will be the poor fans :frowning: (like the Geordies don’t have enough to be depressed about already!)

Poor Xtremeo, I’ll let you support Villa whilst the Newcastle team gets back on its feet (no need to thank me, I was born selfless :flower1: )

I'm not kidding Sobi, the fans will rally round the team more than ever. St James will be a fortress come Saturday and Southampton will get the pounding of their lives. You watch and see if I'm wrong.

It’s certainly not one of Newcastle’s players! - and i’m not saying that just as i am a fan - Newcastle is miles away from London! Mind you they were playing against Arsenal in the capital just a few days before the whole thing happened - hell this really ain’t what Newcastle need!

:smokin2:

It was definitely Newcastle United. I have connections, I know these things.

I'm glad it was Newcastle - that gives the 3 West Midland (Villa, Bham and Wolves) a better chance of staying in the premiership this season. And if West Brom keep up their recent form, that will make it 4 West Midland teams in the premiership … can life get any better!

word is in the town dat k. dyer and c. bellamy are involved but until proven it will remain a rumour, howay the ladz’ concentrate on the footie like…

also the rumour of sir bobby quitting my beloved magpies was a nasty trik of the mackhams who started it in sunderland, just coz’ they are rotting in the 1st division and all they can do is dream of a another north-east derby which they will lose again the next time w play em’ ofcourse… haaa haaaaaaaaaa

there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! there’z only 1 sir bobby robson!!! coem on the magpies :dhimpak:

east or west newcastle are the BESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

Soccer players arrested in rape inquiry](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

LONDON (Reuters) - Police have arrested two soccer players in connection with a 17-year-old girl’s allegations that she was gang-raped at a hotel by several Premiership stars.

The arrests bring to four the number of men who have so far been questioned by police in a case that has badly tarnished the sport’s public image.

“A 22-year-old man attended a London police station by appointment where he was arrested…A 19-year-old man old attended a separate London police station by appointment where he was arrested,” police said in a statement on Friday.

The 22-year-old was released on police bail until a date in late October and the other man was still in custody.

A police source confirmed media reports that the arrested men were both professional soccer players.

Police arrested a 27-year-old man on Thursday and a 29-year-old man on Wednesday. Media reports said neither was a soccer player. Both were freed on bail to return for questioning later in the month.

The teenager’s allegation that she was gang-raped by up to eight top soccer players in the luxury Grosvenor House hotel on September 27 has threatened English football with its worst ever scandal involving player behaviour off the pitch.

It is one of several recent incidents to have hit the prestigious English premier league and has raised questions about the behaviour of young men who are paid huge sums and adulated like pop stars.

Wednesday’s arrest was that of party organiser Nicholas Meikle who told the News of the World newspaper last weekend that he and several other men had consensual sex with the girl. His lawyer denies the rape allegation.

“My client denies the allegation in its entirety and encourages the continued police investigation into this matter which he hopes will reveal the allegations against him to be groundless,” lawyer Mark Bowen told Reuters after Meikle was released on police bail.

Other allegations of sexual assault, drugs and drunkenness involving top soccer players have been splashed across newspaper front pages.

On Wednesday, the England national team’s players provoked widespread criticism after threatening to boycott their decisive Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey on Saturday, after Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was omitted from the squad for having failed to take a mandatory drugs test.
