The thing about leather socks is just what the hadith is based on (Prophet PBUH referring to someone’s khuffs (leather socks).

Scholars today have extrapolated that to any kind of clean socks… here’s a reference:

Hanafi Fiqh is very clear about the socks… they had to be leather… but other fiqhs (as per the link as well) are pretty flexible on the issue.
