Re: foods that lower blood pressure
The main culprit for high blood pressure is too much sodium (salt), and the best way to lower your blood pressure is to hold off on salt. For those who are trying to lower their BP, it is recommended not to exceed having 1 tsp of salt per day. This means being cautious not only in the foods you cook at home, but paying attention to “hidden salt” in foods such as condiments, deli meats, and frozen meals.
One common diet for lowering BP is called the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). This means choosing lower fat and lower sodium foods, more fruits and veggies, and more low-fat dairy. You can also start using Mrs. Dash spice mixes in your cooking instead of other spice mixes that contain salt. The problem with this is that Mrs. Dash spice mixes use potassium instead of sodium to make up for the lost flavor of salt, so in a few cases, it can lead to potassium overload in the body, which will cause other issues. This is rare, though, so not to worry.
Also, quitting smoking is a great way to lower your risk of developing coronary artery disease that can often result from high blood pressure.
My advice is to start by lowering your salt tolerance. I do not usually recommend crash diets, but I, myself, have tried the cabbage soup diet for 1 week, and although it is tough, after that 1 week, I could taste every grain of salt in my food because I had re-sensitized my palate. You could start with the cabbage soup diet, then after 1 week, go back to eating normal food, but make healthier choices and hold off on the salt. If you can do this long-term, mashAllah. If you have trouble keeping up with this, then I suggest moving to the DASH diet.
