Food Supplements

Re: Food Supplements

Don't take iron and even vitamin E without asking a doctor. I take the follwoing supplements:
Multivitamin
Calcium with Vitamin D
Acai Berry
Papaya Enzyme
Supplement to promote healthy joints
Vitamin C
Omega 3
Evening primrose Oil

Re: Food Supplements

wooow do you really take all those supplements? What why? If you are taking a multi than why the need of additional calcium and vit D & C? I honestly think you are good with just a multi and omega 3..although I believe that is also found in a multi.

Don't take fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) unless you are deficient and even the water soluble ones are not needed unless you are deficient! Most healthy individuals get enough nutrients in their diet and don't need to supplement. The only one I would suggest is omega 3 for those that are overwt and have cardiovascular problems or have high blood pressure.

As far as food supplements go, I think CM and Niksik gave good information on that! Normal healthy individuals don't need them!

Re: Food Supplements

The calcium in a regular multi is not enough. Esp. Asians due to their darker skin color lack Vitamin D a deficiency of which may lead to cancer. I actually switched to the Calcium supplement called "Calcet" which is supposed to be good for leg cramps and yes, it did cure my night leg cramps to 80%. The vitamin D is part of the calcium. I don't take the full recommended serving of the ca-D though, just half. Acai Berry I take due to its anti oxitant properties. Vitamin C and Evening Primrose for skin. Joints supplement as I have creaky joints from childhood and Omega 3 as I don't take 3 servings of fish weekly (anyways I eat mostly Tilapia which has a lesser amount of Omega 3 than other fish). Papaya enzyme due to ist varied health benefits. Yes, and I defenitely try to eat a good diet but its not perfect hence the supplements.

I also take half a tea spoon of cinnamon daily.

Re: Food Supplements

All the benefits you mentioned are true but I think most of us get enough in our diets and having to eat additional pills is a hassle. BUT if eating these supplements is benefiting you than that’s great! I don’t know anything about the Primrose, Papaya enzyme and Acai Berry so cant comment on that! Vitamin C is water-soluble so if you eat too much your body will flush it anyways, although it has an upper limit. Vitamin D and Calcium both have an upper limit so make sure you are not taking too much! Refer to this for the DRI tables that list each nutrient and how much you need. http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/reference/table/index-eng.php#rvv

Re: Food Supplements

Thanks, I know about fat soluble and water soluble vitamins. As I mentioned in my post above, I take even less than recommended of teh Vitamin D and Calcium.

Re: Food Supplements

Food supplements are the first advice. For most people they think this is not important and so don’t use them. This is however wrong and one must try as much as possible to find all they could on food supplements.

Adding supplements is a requirement for people who are starting out however.

People who are obese must watch the food intake. They must undergo on a recommended diet. The best form of supplement for people suffering from obesity is creatine.

Though a lot of people engage in various exercises, they do not know which ones are perfect for them in their quest to achieve the perfect physique. Cycling and running is the best if you want to lose weight. If you already have a moderate physical shape then swimming will be the best option for you.
