Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

They have come up with all sorts of theory on why out eating is a terrible idea and if we are exposed to backstage or behind the scenes activity very few would eat in restaurants. But for change of pace we do it ocassionally and at that point I don't think about the horrors especially if the food is tasty.

There is an indian grocery store near our home. My hubby bought Mithai and I notices there was mold on one piece of Mithai. I took it back to te store. The owner let me return and gave me credit to buy something else. So I went about getting something else. I couldn't find it so I went to ask owner where it was. It was then that I noticed that he cut off the piece of mold from the Mithai piece and put it back on in the fridge. He didn't notice that I saw him doing this. I cringed and I dont buy perishable items from that store.

This sort of reminds me of that scene from Bilqees kaur when the man says make baturas from moldy atta to Sadia Imam.

Vo kaise?

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

I don't think this is a desi thing exclusively. I worked in a fast food joint where ppl would touch food without washing their hands or go back to working with food after washing the bathroom. Extremely gross.

I don't wear a hair net while cooking at home but I do have my hair tied back at all times. and I constantly keep washing my hands and making sure that I always have clean counters before and after cooking (wipe them down with clorox clean up).

There are some ppl we are related to that I refuse to step into their kitchen, not because I don't want to help them but because I will never ever touch food in their home if I go into their kitchen. I actually went into one such kitchen and almost threw up. I can't stop going to that home and I can't go to that home and not eat, so I refuse to go into their kitchen and I just can't even make myself pick up a glass in their home.

I have seen this in a few desi households they drink water from a glass and will rinse it and keep it back with the washed dishes. Even if I haven't used a glass and it is outside I will wash it with soap before using it or placing it back with washed dishes, And when I asked this person they said they only wash dishes with soap that have grease on them.

Same thing with serving dishes that have been in the cabinets for a long time, ppl just bring them out, wipe with a towel and use. Why not wash them?

Also holding glass from inside where part of your fingers actually go into the glass .... yikes yuck. I have been handed a few glasses that way in my life time, and same for spoons and forks, holding it from the side you eat and passing it to someone else. Can't ppl see this is unhygienic too.

Cutting boards are usually considered a non essential item in a few desi households. I have one here, that I have marked on both sides (one for meat and one for veggies) if it is used for meat and in prepping I can't get to wash it with hot water, soap I usually use a dinner plate to cut my veggies. Most older desi women cut veggies in their hands itself so don't feel the need for a cutting board for veggies.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

^ Yeah, I've labeled both sides of my cutting board lol. Keeping your hair tied back is necessary, I don't wear a hair net though.

I don't wear gloves in my own kitchen, cos I think that's a bit excessive...but I do make sure to wash my hands/veggies/meat every time I touch them. Like, after handling meat - wash hands with soap, touch something else. So, I'm pretty diligent about that. I do agree though, desi's need a major lesson in food handling safety.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

:k:

Also in gora households the pets spend a lot of time in kitchen (yuck) and while cooking they will stroke the dogs head and then continue with preparing food :expressionless:

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

uh I don’t think thats true perhaps it was at the place you visited but for the most part a lot of people (regardless of race) are careful.

I find wearing a hairnet, apron etc a bit absurd same with the different cutting boards but thats just me.
Washing hands before you cook is ofc a must and cutting meat and vegetables separately is also a must but the way we are heading is a bit too much don’t you think? If we kill off all the germs and bacteria everywhere and keep popping in pills to “fix” ourselves don’t you think our immune system is going to deteriorate till we have nothing?

just my two cents

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Well have been to 3 houses, and the pets were sleeping and playing in the kitchen.

And the many facbooks pictures say enough.

Yes, not all goray do so. Just like not all desis are careless with hygiene.

Spot on! Many goras give elite status to their dogs and cats. Some let them sleep in their beds......actually their houses reek of pet odors! So this problem is not limited to desi households.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Yes, pets are treated different in other societies why must you judge them? Its different life style doesn't mean they are any less hygienic.

I bet you not a lot of people wear hairnets, gloves and aprons in their own kitchen and why should they?

Its not about wearing hairnets and overall hygiene but something's are important especially when you are cooking for others besides yourself.

For example you should not eat straight out the pot or serving bowls because when salavia touches food it spoiles very quickly.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

or let dogs lick your dishes when you are done with eating :halo:

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Kakee, no need to overreact. These are mere facts.
Desis are being judged/generalized overtly, nobody has a problem with that.

People let their dogs kiss their face. Hell they even kiss them back :s They let them in kicthen near the food, they let them lick plates. They sometimes even eat from the same plate...

Btw, I always wear an apron an cover my hair. Most desis I know do so. It is not a new/weird concept to us.
No gloves though becaue I wash my hands enough and keep everything clean.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

My mom and all her aunti friends are very particular about cleanliness and hygiene with food (and really anything else).

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Well I know a lot of desis that don't wear hairnets and lol this is a DESI forum so why should gorays come in? Not all goris have pets and not all of them are smooching them (which is gross).

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

seeking of desi food and hygiene..anyone watch ramseys kitchen nightmares?? all kinds of dodgy joints there. caught one which had an indian diner there..look up dillons and ramseys kitchen nightmares on youtube, some videos are censored others dont so i dont want to post something here and get my butt kicked.

yeah yeah yeah and before someone says boo too he covers other restaurants that have issues too, yes he does indeed. feel free to post about them if you feel the need.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Because billions of people in this world eat restaurant food one or more time in their lives , they would all be dead by now. If your dad's theory is related to desi restaurants only then all desies would be dead by now too.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

I'm quite healthy and I've eaten all over the world.. bought stuff from street vendors and gone to shady restaurants that food were great.

I don't know what happens behind the kitchen but if the food tastes great and I'm not sick after it I'm happy.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

Um...he is referring to how desi people handle food in the kitchen since he has seen it himself.

And I think its obvious he doesn't mean "zeher" in the literal sense.

Re: Food Handling Safety and desi folks.

I did not mean anything I wrote ,literally, either , why are you so serious about it ? Peace. :)
