Do you have any when it comes to buying and eating food?
Are there certain foods that you avoid or refuse to eat for ethical reasons?
Do you buy particular brands or products over others because of ethics?

Re: Food Ethics
I buy fairtrade coffee ( but I wouldnt if I didnt like the taste) and like to eat organic produce.... having said, I think that any worms or insects have absolutely no right to eat my lettuce and I firmly believe they should be blasted into oblivion.
I like to think that Im doing my bit for the community and if I can I TRY to buy fairtrade produce although only to try to make myself feel better.
Re: Food Ethics
Miss Mohabbat... you mention Marks............... have you tried the luxury custard made with double and real vanilla........ its delicious.
Anywayback to ethics now
Re: Food Ethics

Chuck a few of your reduced price goodies over my way too.
Re: Food Ethics
What is 'food ethics'?
I prefer buying groceries from small 'maa n paa' stores than big department outlets.
I hate American bakeries. I don't think they know how to make pastries and cakes. Luckily we have desi bakeries in Chicago.
While buying clothes, I would not buy T-shirts made in a foreign country. USA makes the best cotton products. I avoid anything made in China and I know it is tough.
Re: Food Ethics
girls, i dont work there anymore :p
but when ur a student and ur meals are free from Markies life could not be better :D
Re: Food Ethics
so how many kilos did you put on while working there? I bet the Prof didn't like your working at M&S
Re: Food Ethics

shahreen i sometimes buy things from the coop and they'r all for fairtrade.
Re: Food Ethics
I never used to have any ethics when it came to stuffing my face but certainly over the past year or so I've started becoming a bit more aware about where the food I buy comes from. I only started buying organic food and veg last year when my son became ill and it's a habit I've kept to. Luckily I live in the country and so there's a few local farms who grow and sell organic produce.
I also get my milk and eggs from a nearby dairy farm. If I take Harris with me then I get given a dozen extra eggs for free.
I did try using Ecover cleaning products but they really didn't clean effectively at all, especially the washing up powder.
I try and support smaller local delis, bakerys (yum yum) and fishmongers as much as possible but must admit that sometimes it is easier to just buy what I need from the supermarket if I'm already in there. I justify it by telling myself that I'm saving an unnecessary car journey.
I did have a compost heap untill the storms this winter blew it all over the garden. I don't think my neighbours were too amused when all there lawns were covered in vegetable peelings.
Re: Food Ethics
i avoid products that are made in India for ethical reasons. forced to buy some cause theres no alternative, but will switch to the lamest pakistani equivalents when they arrive

Re: Food Ethics
I am lucky to have an independent family owned bakery near my home and an organic food store as well. Unfortunately they are quite expensive but I am hoping to switch entirely, from food to personal care products, to organic soon. I like buying from them not only for the healthier food but also because they seem to genuinely appreciate your patronage unlike Safeway etc.
Aside from organic, want to totally stop using processed and canned foods, plastic, styrofoam, anything that cannot be recycled, non-environmental friendly laundry detergents. It's going to be tough and expensive though.
Shahreen, I am looking for a good organic cleaning brand. I use commercial cleaners right now and though I use gloves, I hate the fumes. For some time afterward I feel like I am walking around with a ball of chemicals lodged in my throat. Do you know if just vinegar and baking powder would clean effectively? And what about dishwashing liquids?
