Folk music of a country is a source to observe traditions, feelings and emotions of the people of country. The initial folk songs were probably sung at the time of the change in seasons and on the occasions when crops were ready. Thats why we all observe festivals like Besakhi, Holi, jashn e bharan, NawRoz which are start of new year / seasons.
Pakistan’s all four provinces have rich culture and all the sweet languages of our country have melidious folk songs which are sung for different occasions.
In this thread lets share some of our favourite folk songs and traditions connected with these songs.
Starting from the saraiki / punjabi song that relates to happiness when Bajra crop is ready.
Folk song from wadi e gul Rang ‘Balochistan’- Again related to happiness for crops (Khajoor- dates). The song shows that Balochi women like all other women in Pakistan, work together with their men to make a happy living.

I can’t understand Pashto, but language of music tells me that its relates to someone dearest probably the affaection of Pashtun women with their land.
Sindhi Folk Song - ‘Mor tho tillay’. The song is about when the child start walking. In song they comapre first steps of the child with peacock (mor).
As with all the Asian women, Sindhi women start dreaming of marriage of their children and playing with grand children. This song is all about those feelings of Sindhi women.
Kashmiri / Dari song about the hardworking women telling us about their household work. The wording says ‘They love their work and they don’t think it inferior - Ghar de kammech aar na hondai ae’
Which regional languages you can understand? I can understand all (Sindhi, Punjabi, Saraiki, Hindko), but have little success with Balochi and Pashto . But I love music of all the languages.
Lori is the first introduction to rythm / music to our lives. Pakistan every language has melodious Loris which mothers sing for their children. Its simply prayers / best wishes embedded in rythm.
