So confused.
I have been wanting to take folic acid supplements and did some research. Some seem to prefer Folate supplements over synthetic Folic Acid. Which is better?
Re: Folic acid or Folate?
since you seem be doing your research before choosing .. i'd say start by learning about the difference between folate (a general term for the group of vitamin Bs that are water soluble) and folic acid .
Ideal is a healthy diet rich in all vitamins and minerals such that you dont need additional supplementation. an adult requires 400 micrograms per day. Same for a female getting ready to conceive.
prenatal vitamins are designed to cover nutritional gaps for women trying to conceive or those who are in early stages of pregnancy. They are good even if you arnts trying to conceive or pregnant.
So the UK is going to add folic acid in flour in a few weeks time. As if it wasn’t enough that this junk is found in every prenatal. Ladies especially with the MTHFR gene trying to conceive or pregnant, stay safe and take a natural form of folate, preferably methylfolate and/or folinic acid.
I took Folic acid supplements long time ago but I would suggest you to try & include natural food containing Folic acid in your diet instead of the supplements. Folic acid is specifically prescribed to those with iron deficiency or problem with Hb such as anemia / red cells. So based on why exactly you want to take any of those two, you can choose food containing the same. I now strictly follow all food based balanced healthy diet & have taken out all kinds of supplements including multi vitamins from my diet. Nothing can compete naturally grown food. Try eating more greens & less meat. Know your food. What your body needs & what to eat.
I would say to get proper recommendation from a physician …
