FOB students

hmcq,

Sorry didn't get your point on the Lahori/Karachi/ABCD/FOB part. I was mainly talking about FOB (I personally don't like the term though, gotta come up with better one) studends regardless of which city/province the originally belong to.

The FAQ idea is excellent. Let me know when the site will be up. I will email this page to them in hope there might be some help or feedback there for them. Thanks.

pir jee, grade 80??? What am I hearing here???

persoanlly I have never used those terms. but I have been refered by them . Pakisatnis in general I have found to be very predjuced and if you go to most schools you will see people tend to have formed groups. that may be partly be a result of the "birds of the same feather" concept, but it also partly the way people like to think about themselves. Generally people who grew up here tend to view people who did not in some form inferior and outsiders. and there is very little interaction between the two. The same goes for the other divides. i have always thot of this as a very big issue cause it divides the Pakistani/Asian community into smaller groups which are then less useful in helping new students. the very people who could in some way help a new student adapt to the system, prefer not to have anything to do with them.

Its a cultural hiccup we should be willing to acknowledge, accept and then correct.

Wasim,

I personally think that it is very important for immigrant students to make friends with other students within and outside our community. I myself did not have many friends when I was in school so I can understand what you mean.

exactly my point roman... its great to make friends but dont you think people who know the system should be more accomodating ?

sorry guys i know that its out of the way ques

but i heard u guys talkin about sabri nehari r u guys talkin about ny.

if its in ny can u tell me the loc

Nick.. dunno if there are any in NYC but there's one in chicago and thats what we were talking about.

Now that you brought that up, my wife and I actually wondered if its genuine sabri nehari. Because we went to Bindoo Khan restaurant in chicago and the parathhays were terrible. Nothing like the ones in karachi. So this was an imposter one. Dunno about nehari eventhough it was good.

tw ghalib that bundoo khan was closed down recently by health authorities due to hygiene issues.

Problems Personified!!!

All international students face problems like never seen before when they hit the states. For me things were a bit easter .. I already spoke in a cheesy American accent when I entered University of Wisconsin (Cheesy is compatible with Wisconsin).. things were pretty kewl with me and before long I knew everything that a desi in the U.S needed to know. However things for my peers were a bit tougher.. they had tough times adapting.. no communication with the goras (mind the pun) and total misconceptions about monetary matters.. they still thought that a one way ticket and 5K dollars was enough to land you a bachelors degree. I managed to help out lots and lots of desi’s and got em settled in and showed em the ghettos of chicago and the wonders of Dewan street.. I even became the VP of PSA after my second week on campus.. but my 9 month long stint in the states has been one of seeing more and more desis come over with a couple K in their bank and then having to work under the table adn eventually having their status compromised. I am currently working on this web-site where I am compiling info for international students.. hopefully once I get that done I might upload it over some lipton chai and mithai on dewan street or Gerrard or JAckson Heights

I even decided to get up and leave but wiffey was so hungry that sat throug it..

So you think all people here are in US or are from US?

Fraudz and ghalib, sorry yaro, looks like I won't be able to make it as I'm going out of town for training for a month coming Monday, 17th of July.

Dang! here goes another chance to get money out of Fraudia for gas and Nihari.

But anyway if u guys ever come to Iowa u r most welcome to drop by my place…and i may be going to minnesota and chicago again in august…

Well things are pretty much same here down here in Australia for international students. I feel sorry for them as well but I have never done any thing worth mentioning in this regard because I could never do any thing apart from helping some of them with their studies . But I strongly believe that any body who goes through all this will get the reward after all.

how long do you think it takes an average foriegn student to adjust to a different culture and be a part of it?

I always felt that the guys who came as undergrad did much better than the guys who came for grad school...so age was one factor, social class was another...what else.

It took me about a month i think....
and as i told u b4 i am a grad student...and furthur more my family is with me.....
so according to u i should not have adjusted as yet....
but i think it varies from individual to individual....

They recover the culture shock in about 4-6 months and then the stage comes when they start converting dollar to ruppee every time they buy some thing and that makes them look for the jobs which are very easy to find and then when they realise that they are already earning more money then they possiblt will make when they start the career back home, they looses the plot and start workig day and night and stuff the studies .
Well this is true for most of the people between 17-27 does n't matter if they are doing post grad or fresh man .
But yes the younger people tend to recover quickly(in case if they do at all) . I have actually seen quite a few people going through all this . It's always the company that makes them think weather they should study and live a hard life for now and enjoy latter on or live a glamourous life now and suffer later on . It's also true that not all of them suffer latter on infact they do sometimes settle down but would never get a white collar job .
Mostly pakistanis here prefer to live among other desi's which is not quite good from my point of view , as this limits their chances to adopt to the new culture .

do you guys think that it helps if you have increased socialization with locals vs desis?
Both in terms of settling in and in terms of future opportunities?
