I was just curious if there’s anything in Pakistani/Punjabi culture that’s similar to the African American cultural practice of playing the dozens (i.e. “This element of the African American oral tradition in which two competitors, usually males, go head-to-head in a competition of often good-natured insults”)
I have a sense that there is, because I remember whenever I’m back in my village in the Potohar region, I hear a lot of “sh!t” talking between boys, and know of the wedding practice of sithanian (insult song sung by the bride’s family directed towards the groom’s father – it’s playful teasing)
In my quest to figure this out, I’ve come across “jugat bazi” — what is this exactly? Is it just in the theatre?
Re: flyting - playing the dozens — and what is jugat bazi?
I am not fammiliar with this concept then again I guess it must be a Punjabi culture thing.
In my culture insults even in jest are often taken a little too seriously and not always with good consequences… I know where far too lame and party poopers but we make good friends and better enemies.
However I have learned something thanks to this thread Juggat Bazi sounds interesting…
By the way I cant believe the teasing songs directed at grooms father… you gotta be joking
Re: flyting - playing the dozens --- and what is jugat bazi?
