Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

Doctor has advised flu vaccine for Guriya . She has been having ear infections very frequently. She already had all 3 shorts of Prevenar. I have heard many bad things about flu vaccine and I am very worried and confused :frowning:

please share your experience and advise.

Re: Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

Hello;

I’m sorry to hear she has had many ear infections. But, the flu vaccine wouldn’t contribute to that. In fact, I give the flu vaccine to my patients if even they are on antibiotics for an ear infection (as long as the parents consent). The flu vaccine is always advised, especially for starting at 6 months of age… Infants, young children, elderly are at risk for the complications from the Flu. There is no treatment for the flu.. it weakens your immune system and leaves you open to super imposed infections… I’ve seen the worst of it, as would have most doctors.

Side effects expected are as after any vaccine- fever, pain at the site (if you get the shot- they do also have the nasal spray for ages 2 and older that do not have asthma or other chronic disease). Sometimes a slight cold afterwards.

But I’d discuss it further with your doctor. I advise it for every patient of mine.

  • Not sure where you are, but prevnar has 4 shots, your daughter, needs the last booster.

Re: Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

vaccines are pretty safe these days. if your family physician has recommended for your GuRiyaa, i think you should get one for her…the benefits far outweigh the risks!

Re: Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

I do not know about Prevenar but my son used to get ear infections every winter. He would then get antibiotics. We were visiting Pakistan in winter when he was 1 and then again when he was 2.
The ped here told me that kids stop getting ear infections usually after about 3 years. I know 3 families who got tubes in ear to avoid ear infection for their kids. I did not go the tubes route though
I think your daughter is around 2 right ? InshaAllah the ear infections will stop as she grows.

Most of the people here get flu vaccine. I have not heard too many bad things about the flu vaccine so if your ped is recommending get it for her.

You can read up more about the tubes and if you prefer, get it for her. These are very tiny tubes that stop the fluid retention (I think) in ears and eventually come out by themselves as well as the kids grow but do read up on it.

Re: Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

Thank you all for your replies :flower1:

Gigabyte : thanks for the very detailed reply. My daughter will get the booster in 5th year I think. I will check her immunisation book not really sure about it.

KKF : Yes this is what I have been thinking that I should get one for her :frowning:

sarad: my daughter has just turned 3 masha allah . This is the 1st time I have read bout tubes in ear to prevent ear infection I will google about it. I don’t think one gets ear infection from another person but ever since she has started school she is getting sick more often I think her immune system is weak :bummer: past 2 months have been very tough just because she kept on falling sick again and again one week after another and everytime it was a viral or an infection.

Re: Flu Vaccine for my 3 year old

Diamond hope your daugter feels better soon,iA.
Younger kids are more prone to develop ear infections because of the anatomy of the ear.The eustachian tubes are smaller in length and more horizontal and that can contribute to repeated infections.
As others said,Prevenar is different from flu shots. My daughter is a lil older than 2.5 years and she has been getting her flu shots and AH has been fine.
As you said she has started school,so she is exposed to a lot more people/kids now and that might be another factor.
