Is flossing your teeth good or bad?
I usually brush my teeth twice daily , use mouth wash but I don’t floss. The main reason why I have never flossed is because I believe it will create gaps in my teeth.

Re: Flossing your teeth
Flossing teeth is a must because how else would you get the food particles stuck between teeth and just under the gum lining? i'm reminded by my dental hygienist almost on my every visit to her for routine dental check-up N cleaning.
this way you can easily avoid unnecessary gum diseases and big bucks at the end of the day.
take a floss and get going! :p
Re: Flossing your teeth
I would say that flossing once a day is even more important than the second brushing. Brushing only cleans the outer surface of the teeth. It's flossing that removes food and plaque from the sides of the teeth. If not removed, this plaque builds up into tartar and will cause tooth decay and gum disease.
There is a proper technique for flossing which should be followed - it's not just passing the floss through the gap to remove food but to actually clean those inner surfaces and the gum line. Proper dental floss won't cause teeth to widen; it's thin and flat. Some people find it hard to floss because there is already a lot of tartar build up between the teeth.
If you have never been, go to a dental hygienist. The hygienist will remove any tartar build up and teach you how to brush and floss properly.
My dentist says the same.

Re: Flossing your teeth
Flossing is a must. Trust me once you start flossing you will see the difference. Your mouth will just feel much healthier. Your gums will start to look healthier. And if you bleed when you brush, then regular flossing will either finish it completely or will reduce it significantly. My dental hygienist says she flosses every time she eats something. I don't have time for that but once a day is must. Also, it prevents the bone loss of tooth when you floss.
Re: Flossing your teeth
i have to floss all the time due to gaps in my gum, its the only way to get trapped bits out, and it does leave your mouth refreshed, although not the same as when you brush

yearly check up? isn't that too long too wait for dental cleaning?
the norm is every six [6] months. appointment with a dental hygienist is good enuf for cleaning...the dentist sees you for a 2 minutes at the end of your cleaning session.

Most dentists in the UK don't advise or advise very well on dental hygiene.
I would ask the dentist if you have tartar build up. If yes, then you need to book an appointment with a hygienist. It's usually £35-£50 for 45 mins and be prepared, the first time can be pretty rough. It's not a quick clean like the dentist performs.
Re: Flossing your teeth
^ here in Canada, tartae buil-up [plaque] removal is part of the dental cleaning which doesn't let the plaque build up.

They do once per year but I can go to the dentist any time i want. Last month, I had pain because my wisdom tooth was growing then I booked appointments in emergency 3 times a week.Luckily, I got to see the dentist on time. My yearly check up was due but I didn't go.Later on, when I went I was more bothered about wisdom tooth.

True, they are not. Last year, the dentist cleaned my tooth and asked me to come back after 3 months. Also, told me to use Corsodyl the best mouth wash as my gum used to bleed. After three months, the dentist said your gums have improved and they look healthy. I think they cleaned the tarter that time.
Re: Flossing your teeth
Yes, flossing is important. Should try to do it once a day. You need to go into each gap twice (to get both sides of the teeth) and hug the floss to the tooth in a C shape so it is contacting the tooth surface and then pull the floss up.

Depends on your caries development risk, hygiene routine and dental health. 1 year may be fine for a person who brushes their teeth well and has no decay whereas a person who has a lot of calculus, has active decay and does not brush well may require a 3 month recall. Ever patient is different.

I thought the same thing... except I don't think it's a stereotype. When it comes to dentistry, NHS service is pretty basic. Since the government changed the way NHS dentists are funded, it's become worse. And since we don't have dental plans and people taking out insurance is a pretty new thing, dental treatment beyond the basics is a cost most people don't want to or can't afford.
