Almost every time I plug my flash drive the message “USB Device not Recognized” pops up. So than I have to replug it, sometimes up to 3-4 times. This happens not only on my home computer but at work as well, does this mean that my flash drive thingy ma thingy is one step closer to the grave and I should save the files from it on some other device?
The XP out of the box comes with 1.1 USB drivers. If your flash drive is USB 2.0, make sure you install SP1 at the least because that has support for USB 2 or so I heard
The other thing I would check would be to make sure that you have correct drivers for your USB device.
The last thing I've found with XP is that their Power Management system can sometimes cause issues. Try the following:
Right-click on My Computer|Properties|Hardware Tab|Device Manager. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click one of the USB Root Hubs and select properties|Power Management. Uncheck box labeled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
If none of the aboe alleviate your issues, I suspect that your USB controller on the mobo is going bad.
