Suspect in custody; three women in critical condition
(CNN) – One person was killed and five others were wounded, three critically, in a shooting at the Jewish Federation in downtown Seattle, Washington, police said.
Police have detained a Pakistani suspect, said a law enforcement official.
Authorities do not believe the suspect was affiliated with any radical political or religious group, said FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge David Gomez.
“We believe, at this point, it’s just a lone individual acting out some kind of antagonism toward this particular organization,” he said.
Several witnesses told The Associated Press they saw a man shoot a woman on a sidewalk near the building.
One witness on the first floor of the building told the AP she heard shots and crashing sounds on the second floor.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is helping with the investigation because the attack involved a religious organization, police said.
Five victims, all women, were taken to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, according to a media line at the hospital. Three victims required surgery for injuries to the knee, groin, abdomen or arm. The hospital listed them in critical condition.
The other two injured women were in satisfactory condition, according to Harborview Medical Center. The hospital said one of the two women is five months pregnant.
While responding Friday afternoon to reports of shots fired being fired at the center, police received a call from a man identifying himself as the gunman who said he was holding people hostage, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said. An officer “was able to talk him out” of the building, he said.
The suspect “was confronted by officers and peacefully gave up,” said Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz.
A vehicle belonging to the suspect was found nearby, and bomb and explosives technicians examined it “to make sure it’s safe,” Metz said.
Police do not suspect there were other gunmen, but they are investigating whether accomplices were involved, Metz said. More than 10 people were thought to be in the building at the time of the shootings.
Seattle police issued a bulletin Thursday asking officers to closely monitor synagogues and Jewish organizations, Metz said.
The Anti-Defamation League has been warning Jewish institutions to make sure they have ample security because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, said Robert Jacobs, Pacific Northwest regional director for the league.
If an institution cannot provide adequate security, it might be better for Jews “not to congregate in one location that might be an obvious site,” he said.

Anti can you link this shooting to the teaching in mosques. Do you have proof that this guy was brain washed by some mullah inthe mosque. If you cannot provide evidence I suggest you withdraw your remarks.
I personally feel this is a despicable act and the guy will get what he deserves but to make assumption based on personal biases is just not right.

Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said a Muslim gunman killed a woman and wounded five others at a Jewish center in Seattle, Washington, Friday afternoon, and police were protecting mosques as well as synagogues out of fears of retaliation.

The 31-year-old Muslim of Pakistani descent was angry at Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, officials said.
In a written statement, the Council on American-Islamic Relations on Friday condemned the attack.
“The American Muslim and Jewish communities must do whatever is within their power to prevent the current conflict in the Middle East from being transplanted to this country,” the Washington-based civil rights and advocacy group said.
Robert Jacobs, Pacific Northwest Regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, told CNN the group has been warning Jewish institutions to be wary and have adequate security because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Haq, who lives in Pasco, 180 miles from Seattle, is being held in King County Jail.
Kerlikowske said Haq walked into the Jewish Federation building shortly after 4 p.m. armed with a large caliber semi-automatic handgun.
He asked for the manager and then started shooting.
One woman was killed and five others wounded, police said.
The five victims were hospitalized; three of the women were wounded critically while the other two victims, including a 37-year-old who is 20 weeks pregnant, were in satisfactory condition.
The wounded ranged in age from 23 to 43. Although all were women, nothing indicated that women were targeted, Kerlikowske said.
Marla Meislin-Dietrich, a co-worker who was not in the building, said staff members recalled Haq as saying: “I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel,” according to The Associated Press. The AP quoted her as saying his shooting was described as random.
About 12 minutes after the shooting began, the man laid down his handgun and surrendered to SWAT officers, Kerlikowske said.
Kerlikowske said he believed the shooting was a hate crime, based on what Haq had said to a 911 operator and supervisor. Kerlikowske declined to divulge further details.
“We are also protecting mosques, because there is always the concern of retaliatory crime or retaliatory incident,” Kerlikowske said.
Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz said police had no specific information about any threats, but his department had issued an alert on Thursday “reminding officers to be vigilant to monitor synagogues and mosques in the city.”

The only proof could be to get some mp3 files from any of the Jumma khutba (speech). During my visits to North America I have the chance to attend Friday sermons, Sunday Halaqa (meeting) and meetings in private homes.
I had the privilege to attend family gatherings with American Jewish homes as well. It is heartwarming how Jewish-Americans go out of their way to please their Pakistani guests. Food at their home, and their family celebrations are pretty much the same as in Karachi. And why not? We follow their religion or the religion of Abraham Ah any ways.
NRP's (Non Resident Pakistanis) incessant fetish with Israel and Jews is pretty common. If you ask for proof, I'll invite you along next time I am in the area.
Back home in Pakistan, we have plenty of Mullahs making heroes out of crazy people. Amir Cheema "Shaheed" (Yeah right!) is another example. However many of these village Mullahs may not have had a chance to live in the West for long period of time. Their image of the West and Western Jewish people may have been tainted. However those NRPs living in the West for long time should develop a better global sense. This will not only help their future generations, but also help Pakistan tremendously.
Prosperous NRPs in future can play the same role that wealthy non residents form China and Bharat are playing to improve financial situation there.
We as Pakistani Muslims were supposed to lead the "less endowed" regions out of spiritual poverty. Instead, we have ended up lapping all the $hite doled out of Middle East.

Really sad, did he think by murdering those people he can get done what Lebanon is trying to achieve? This is not the way to go irrespective of how frustrated you are. You can start a public demonstration outside White House, gather support for your cause etc, resorting to violence only proves nothing.
