40.2 Hall to Gough, no run, penalty runs! short delivery outside the off
stump, Gough misses it so does the keeper, ball hits the helmet
and England gets five runs
My question is, can someone explain this rule to me? Why is it in place?
It is a very valid rule. Had the ball not hit the helmet (placed by the fielding side), it could have gone for a boundary. What I don't understand is why it's 5 and not FOUR runs?. Are the rule-makers at MCC taking an over-throw into account or they are just punishing the fielding side?.
It has always been five runs. It doesnt matter if the ball would have gone to the boundry or not. Even if the ball touches the hat of anyone from the fielding side it's 5 runs. Thats just a rule, nothing to do that the ball could have gone somewhere else for more runs.
LM, I am not saying that the ball had to hit the helmet at certain velocity for the umpire to award five runs. I know, if it hits helmet not worn by close-in fielders, it is fiuve runs.
Do you know what happens if a batsman plays a shot and it hits a clos-in fielder's helmet, pops in air and fielding side catches the ball?. Do you think it is out or not?. I know the answer.
I know.. and its not just the helmet. The same rule applies to the hats worn by the fielding side. I dont know the logic behind the rule. The question asked was if someone can explain this rule. I dont think anyone can explain anything about it. I suppose its just a rule thats there to be followed.
Why is it stupid? Why shouldn't the fielding side be penalised for stopping the ball by means other than the fielders?

I didn't see the match but was it guarenteed that the ball would have gone to cross the boundry had the helmet not been in the way. And like someone mentioned, why not 4 runs, why 5 runs?
Using the same theory, batting sides should also be penalized if a batsman gets in the fielders way to prevent a run out.
Example, Inzi got in Caddick's way in Natwest Series in 2001.

Yes there is a rule. And batsman can be given Out 'Obstracting the Field" if umpire thinks that this was done deliberately.
I think giving 5 runs is justified. One run is just a penality to keep helment on ground.Helmet is not supposed to be kept on ground.its a privilage and if it obstructs the game then penatly should be imposed.
Coming to other point.. If a batsman hits the ball and if it hits the helmet of a fielder and then catch is taken then Batsmane would be out.But if helmet was kept on ground then he is not out.

If this rule isn't there, you can bet there will be several helmets lying all over the ground. Then what will u say? :)

First of all, I don't think Helmet should be allowed to be layed on grounds anywhere.
All the accesories should be given to the umpires.
So the rule of helmets on ground should be ended to cause even more trouble.
About obstructing the field, it can be happen unintentionally as well by the batsman, so giving the batsman out would be a huge penalty, I think it should also be limited to 4 or 5 runs.
why not give the helmet to the umpire at the bowler's end (as the bowlers do with caps and what not)...he could either hold it or put it at his feet...
I have a better idea yet. Why not build a small in-the-ground box (like a safe box) by square leg umpire at each end. Fielding (and even batting) helmets may be placed there when not in use. It shouldn't be too costly. Once the box is inserted in the ground, it can be covered with astroturf top. It will be non intrusive.
