Surrogate mother gives birth to quins - and waives £8,000 fee

The Guardian

A woman who advertised her services as a surrogate mother to earn extra cash gave birth to five boys yesterday for a childless couple, and declined to accept a fee from them.

Teresa Anderson delivered the quintuplets in five minutes by Caesarean section. All five boys - Enrique, Jorge, Gabriel, Victor and Javier - were doing well, said Craig Fischer, a spokesman for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Centre in Phoenix, Arizona.
However, Javier has a rare heart defect, and will require a series of operations or a heart transplant.

They were visited in hospital by their biological mother, Luisa Gonzalez, who said in a statement: “She has given me my dream; she has given us our family.”

The biological parents and Ms Anderson opposed aborting any of the babies, even though selective reduction is often practised in multiple pregnancies.

Ms Anderson also decided against accepting payment because of the expense of raising five children awaiting Ms Gonzalez and Mr Moreno.

Ms Anderson, 25, had originally offered her services as a way of earning extra cash. Her previous pregnancies had gone smoothly, and she anticipated few problems when she agreed to carry a baby for Ms Gonzalez and her husband, Enrique Moreno, for a $15,000 (£7,900) fee. But her plans changed dramatically when doctors discovered that all five fertilised embryos from the childless couple had implanted in Ms Anderson’s uterus, and that she was carrying quintuplets.

Her obstetrician, Dr John Elliott, said her decision to carry all five children to term was extraordinary.

“Quintuplets are very, very difficult to carry,” he said, noting the pain and discomfort for the mother.

“To do that for someone else is extraordinary.”

Ms Anderson’s husband, Jerad, said of his wife a few hours after the surgery: “She’s happy. She’s smiling now. She’s relieved.” Before the procedure, she was said by doctors to have felt strong enough to walk into the delivery room - something her doctor said he’d never seen with any woman carrying quintuplets.

Re: five little babies given away free

Phheeewwww!!!

I like the idea of somebody else doing the hard work!

Re: five little babies given away free

The couple should still pay her or do something nice showing that they appreciate what she has done for them !!!

Re: five little babies given away free

She doesnt want them to pay because they will have a huge amount to pay for baby stuff, and then toddler stuff and then little kids stuff, so on and so forth.

Its likely that the surragate will get newspaper deals if she sells her story.

On a less cynical note, what she's done is admirable!

Re: five little babies given away free

Whatever the motivations, carrying 5 kids at the same time is a super human feat!

Re: five little babies given away free

Five babie given away free? More like, returned to manufacturer free.

It wasn't her eggs and it wasn't her partner's sperm that made those kids. It was someone else's babies and they were just returned.

She merely waived the fee for 9 months of storage.

Re: five little babies given away free

lol, The huns had a school of thought similar to this

they thought that the women was like a storage pot.

Re: five little babies given away free

well well Ms Anderson i wouldn't go around being as proud as you are...you told me you were going to keep them :p

Re: five little babies given away free

Hmmmnn, Catherine zeta Jones perhaps.....

Re: five little babies given away free

darling...cathrine? no no no...such a noble beauty like yourself should be played by Dame Judi Dench (sp?) afterall she fits the age range perfectly

Re: five little babies given away free

You mean they are not???

Re: five little babies given away free

I am carrying one and i am so tired. She must have gone through some pain. Well! God Bless her with what she wants.

Re: five little babies given away free

^^^ Miss M, I command that you address me with the respect due to me

I will be called Lady Daisy, and you will curtsey when you say it!

I am disgusted, thats right DISGUSTED with a capital D and also horrified that you would feel that the wonderful Dame Judy,a national treasure I may add, fits my age range…

although its not a bad idea
the Dame Dudy Jench shall play me at the begining of the fillum and she shall be looking back at her wonderful life, I would also propose we have real Actors… the type that have treaded the boards st Shakespear’s hallowed theater.

Yes, we’ll have Catherine playing me… she’s agreed , she just called you know!

Mad Scientist…:smash:

Re: five little babies given away free

Maddy its not just the eggs or sperm, its the very fact that a mother carries the baby for those nine months.

Re: five little babies given away free

yeah, so she acted as mobile storage for 9 months. My point remains.

Re: five little babies given away free

As a what!!! She carried a child!!! Nevermind.

Re: five little babies given away free

Ok, so mobile storage with feeding and waste removal functionality.

Re: five little babies given away free

wow..how do u carry 5 kids in ur womb..damn

Re: five little babies given away free

Pregnancy is by far the most difficult job. She shouldn't really be charging in the first place. What she has done does sound good. It must be really tough for her to give them away.
