PESHAWAR: A suspected suicide car blast targeting security forces in a sensitive area of Peshawar killed at least three people and injured 13 others, Samaa reported Tuesday.
According to initial reports, the blast took place on Mall Road in one of Peshawar’s sensitive areas where army and government installations are located.
Officials said the car explosion targeted a convoy of Frontier Corps.
Three dead bodies and 13 injured were shifted to city’s main Lady Reading hospital, police and rescue officials confirmed.
A security official and a woman were among the dead, said the hospital spokesman, adding that two FC men were among the eight injured.
Security forces cordoned off the scene littered with broken glass and human remains.
“It seems that the attacker was driving an explosives-laden car that he rammed into FC convoy,” CCPO Peshawar Ijaz Khan said while speaking to reporters on the site.
He said about 45-kilograms of explosive material were used in the blast that, he said, might be a reaction of military’s ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation in North Waziristan.
The blast was so powerful that it damaged two vehicles – a rickshaw and a motorbike – and windowpanes of nearby buildings where residents of high military officials reside.
Faisal Shahzad, another senior police official, said target of the attack appeared to be Brigadier Khalid Javed, the second-most senior officer in the FC force.
However, the officer remained safe.
Nobody immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack but militants have carried out several such attacks against police and security forces in the past.
