Fish

I really like fish but i don’t really know how to shop for them..i have no problems with prawns but fish is another story…which is frustrating really… i’ve never had to buy them myself before i’ve moved here… now whenever i go to market… i just can’t decide what to buy and how to cook them… i do know how to fry… but i do like them in a curry as well… and oh yeah.. would love it if some one will be kind enough to translate the fish names into english… like what is “surmayee” or “rahu” called in english?? more fish names would be appreciated… Thanks!!

Re: Fish

Basa?? must be a local fish.

Most desis use Nile Perch fillets.
It holds itself in a curry and doesnt fall apart and also is yum grilled.

Just dont buy it form woolies or coles cause its just blah

Re: Fish

hmm well i buy this fish basa here in ny..

Re: Fish

Married... where in NY do you buy the basa? I used to hate fish, but now I don't want to feed my family meat every day, so I make fish as often as possible. Aleezay.... I have a similar problem, especially here in the suburbs where fresh fish is limited to three kinds. If you can find a chinese grocer that carries live fish, that would be best. Where I grew up, we always went to the chinese markets for fish; they had these big tanks with fresh live fish, and you could get them cleaned and cut right there for you.

Barring that option, tilapia I think is one of the best. It's very easy to make, almost like a regular curry. marinate the tilapia in a bit of salt and turmeric for 10 mins, then fry separately; this gets rid of the fishy taste. Then cook in regularly, using coriander, cumin, salt, pepper, and turmeric, tomatoes, potatoes, etc.

I don't suggest catfish, or any other fish that is a bottom-feeder. They have that 'dirt' taste whenever you bite into the fish; very yucky. Salmon doesn't go well with curries.

Re: Fish

there is a store in New Hyde Park on hillside ave,,mahraja grocery..its near afgah gril resturant

Re: Fish

Thank you every one.. actually i do go to chinese store for my fish... but never got to decide on any one of them as all that different sorts mostly confuse me .... so i used to buy prawns or shrimps instead....

LegallyBrown: so Nile perch is availble easily or do i havto go some where particular for that?

Syani: What sort of fish is tilapia??

Married: You havto send me an airline ticket if i should be buying fish from there.. I am in Sydney :)

Re: Fish

I'd never buy fish from the chinese store, Never Ever.
Its dirty and yucky.

Buy fish from Costi Bros.
They are in almost every Westfield downstairs where all the food shops are.
Or any speciality fish shop.

They clean it so nicely and its fresh.

Its available very easily everwhere.

Re: Fish

Hmmm... Do they have an outlet in Parramatta or Granville?

Re: Fish

Parra has westfield and the food area is on level 5
there is a nice seafod shop over there along with coles and asian shops.

Try that.

Its past the food court towards the pet shop and just keep going till you get to the end of that level.

I dont do Granville, its full of chumps and retards.

I dont do Parra either that much anymore cause of all the lebs and arab pollution.
Just misbehaved bunch of morons with no manners.

Re: Fish

Married: Thanks for the info.

Aleezay... Tilapia is a small tropical fish, about 12 inches in length. Has a light buttery flavor and is not overpowering. Pomfret is nice, if you know how to cook it. I need to get a recipe for that. Carp, also known as rui is also good, but you have to know how to cook it.

LegallyBrown... the Chinese markets in boston are much better than the ones in nyc. The one we went to in boston was always clean and well-lit, and the fish always fresh. Its better to buy the fresh ones than the ones imported from South Asia; a lot of those fish have been injected with hazardous toxins.

Re: Fish

Thanks to the Koreans .. no for the NUKE but for the departmental stores they have opened across Washington DC area. " GRAND MART " Fish of all kinds, Cuts of all kinds and yes its clean and fresh.

Cant agree more with Sayani .... TILAPIA is the smell free fish I can eat. The other one is Alakan Cod. but for Desi cooking ... ONLY TILAPIA.

THE ONLY FISH I EVER HAD WITHOUT THE SMELL OF A FISH
