I am recently on this health craze and so I went and got some Mahi-Mahi fish yesterday. Its a fillet cut into small pieces. I need to make a salan out of it and I am clueless. (salan should be chat-paata)
Please help !!! Need to make this for dinner tonight otherwise my fish will sit in the fridge and rot
i guess u could marinate the fish, broil or bake till its flaky and add it to a regular curry sauce (one made with yogurt and tomatoes in the traditional way). I made it like that once a long time ago and it came out pretty good.
Diva, i am not a big fan of salan fish..i like mine baked, grilled or fried..you can cook it with same masala as the rest of the salans..but if you want something different..try green paste of coriander, mint and green chillies with yogurt and milk
or yogurt with salt and crushed chillies..
or onion, green and red peppers with achar ka masala and tomato paste.
Diva: here is a good fish salan recipe of mine which is very famous among my inlaws. They hate me but they love this salan of mine.
For 2 pounds of fish
First of all marinate the fish in lemon juice only before cooking it. 15 minutes is good.
Take 2 onions and thinly slice them. Fry them in olive oil. once the onions are golden/slightly darker than golden brown add fresh chopped garlic to that.
Stir for a few minutes and add tomato purree to that. About 5-6 tablespoons of puree. Stir again and now add salt, red chili peppers, dhania powder and black pepper all according to your taste.
Bhoonify the masala well. even add a little water and make sure it evaporates in the bhoonafying process. Once all that is done add sookhi mehti. Rub the methi in your hands about 1/2 teaspoon of it and add it to the masala.
Once the oil separates from the masala add your fish pieces. It should only take a about 10 minutes for the fish to cook from here on. If you want a tangy taste i usually add one dried plum to the salan.
I serve this salan with white boiled rice. It is very yummy. Hope you like it and let me know the results.
