Which one of you knows the real reason for the first world war?
Re: First world war quiz?
June 1914 Death of King Ferdinand of Austria/Hungary by a Serbian Nationalist Grp. Warning from Austria/Hungary Govt to the Serbian. Because of Treaty signed betweenm Serbians and Russia, the Serbians asking for help from Russia. France treaty to Russia, forced thenm to join, England's treaty to France forced them to join in. Because of the colonies of England the following countries joined in.. Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the Union of South Africa. Japan with a Military agreement with England decided to attack on Germany.
Austria/Hungary asking Germany to back them up because of a similar treaty between them. Itally was kinda sorta on thier side.
US as always remained "neutral" ( as always it wanted to but transgress later)....................

Re: First world war quiz?
real reasons were that france and britain cannot stand germany becoming a world power ,jealous of her navy and wanting revenge for the trouncing germany gave to france in 1870-71....germany on the other hand was afraid of the rapid improvement in russian army and wanted a quick war to decisively beat the russians before they get too much of a superority over geman army
archduke wali baat tu siraf aik excuse tha for the bigger powers to get involved in a regional conflict
Re: First world war quiz?

they did infact germans french even had uniforms almost a relic of napolean's time and used swords and lances more than carbines ....but motors were getting more and more common though no army was totally mechanized yet

oil ! not a major reason but yes natural resources generally speaking
europeans were more interested in nitrites for their shells than oil for their armies which were either static or dependent on horsedrawn transports

Re: First world war quiz?
Guys....
British Navy used to depend on Coal
German Navy had changed over to using oil and hence were more powerful and faster.
GB used to pride it'self over the sea's, infact Britain used to rule the seas and had the best Navy
This came under threat...No way could the British afford the Germans getting a secure supply of oil ---They had just realised how powerful this new substance was...
Germany was building a railway all the way to present day Iraq in order to get it's solid supply of oil...This could not be allowed under any circumstances, remember...GB was a superpower then, just like USA is today.. Would the USA let any other country become a superpower and challenge it???
Hence the war...

This theory is flawed, because Germany first declared war against Russia, France and Belgium before Britain declared war on Germany.
Furthermore, the treaty that obligated Britain to attack any country that attacked Belgium was signed in 1839, long before the technology to power ships with oil was developed.
Re: First world war quiz?
Oil was hardly a significant factor for WWI. It became such a huge war because of all the cross treaties countries had made with each other. Russia went against Austro-Hungarian empire to save Serbia. Germany went against Russia to save the Austro-Hungarians, France and Britain jumped in to save Russia.
Everybody wanted to flex their muscles and show the other, who's the boss. Germany was the most industrialized nation and the largest economy of Europe whereas Britain and France were ruling the world. They were itching to test their powers against each other but instead of settling things, they ended up losing millions of productive citizens and paving the way for WWII.
Re: First world war quiz?
No this theory is not flawed..
I cannot go into the details over here but please read the book
"A century of war" by F W Engdahl....
You will see the connection oil has had in to name a few
World War 1
World war 2 to an extent
The crumbling of Russia
Berlin Wall
The asian financial crisis
Iraq war etc
These are just a few things that have connections to oil
You will be very Naive to dismiss it without first reading the book where the Author has spent quality time researching and backing any claims wioth facts, dates, quotes etc
Re: First world war quiz?
^^
Basic research still shows that some of the premises are utterly false.
For example, you stated that “German Navy had changed over to using oil and hence were more powerful and faster.”
A study of the schematics of Imperial German Navy battleships using oil fired boilers and Royal Navy Coal burners built in the same year show that the ships were of a similar displacement and speed; moreover, the Royal Navy coal burners seem to have a longer range.
Compare the German Konig class with the British Iron Duke class.
