First Trimester experiences and advice

What kinds of food should a pregnant woman in her first trimester be eating? What should be avoided?

Also did some women NOT experience sickness at all? If they did what week did it kick in?

Should we be exercising or lifting things, or should we take more care about how we go about things…I think experienced mums would be so helpful to answer these niggling lil questions for the newly or first time preggers!! Thanks guys!

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

I am in my second trimester, first time pregnant, not THAT experienced though.. But let me answer keeping in mind my experience.

Eat anthing you want to eat because mostly in first trim people have nausea and vomittings and in that case you dont feel like eating ANYTHING... better is to have as much fruits and juices and liquids and veggies as you can not just in first trim but throughout your pregnancy, avoid GARAM cheezaien...

I didnt experience ANY sickness any vomitting anything i my first trim.. (i just felt like to vomit).. untill unless I had spotting... I do normal household chores.... But better is to rest as much as you can in your first trimester, because its critical most for baby's development... Dont stand up for longer time... while resting put 2-3 pillows under your feet and thats it

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

ok its my first time too.. in week 12 now. i didnt have any najor symptoms.. no vomiting nausea at all!! except 2 times but i think that was becus i strted takin metformin. i didnt know i was preg until 3 1/2 months so i missed out on all that. infact i remember putin 5 gallon bottle on dispenser and doin all sort of stuff like walkin runnin, eatin junk like a horse :D but AH i m blessed. Allah protected me and my baby. but yeah its gud to take care always in the first tri.
as soon as i got to know i m preg i strted my multi vitamins, have fresh salads, orange juice almost daily. bread butter jam for breakfast and normal food for dinner. make sure you have alil bit of everythin... lil bit of folic acid, calcium, iron, vitamins (in different food items) etc. have brocolli, fresh fruits and veggies, pasta, rice etc.
stay away from fish of high mercury, dun eat sushi, cheese of some kinds or raw meat. cook ur chicken and meat properly.
best of luck...!! :)

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

Take prenatal vitamins and omega 3. Talk to your doctor about recommendations.

Avoid soft cheeses and unpasteurized cheeses.

Avoid raw foods, smoked meats, and deli meats -- anything that is not fully cooked.

Eat foods rich in folic acid, iron, and omega 3. Eat lots of spinach, broccolli, apples, etc. Eat lots of fruits and veggies.

I had bad nausea and frequent vomiting. I couldn't be around desi food at all. Water was very hard to consume. I tried juices and popsicles, but I still wasn't getting enough water. I craved melons and other juicy fruits.

If nausea gets bad, people recommend crackers. I did that for a bit, but for much of the first trimester I was eating Cheerios constantly.

As far as exercising goes. If you were a regular before the pregnancy then its okay to keep up with the exercises but make sure with your doctor first. Still no weight lifting.
Jogging, walking is fine. Nothing vigorous.

Also avoid hot baths completely & hot showers as well.

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

anyone else, need more advise please. 11 weeks :)

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

^ All of this.

For me, all I could keep down was Taco Bell's 7 Layer Wraps which are basically just condiments in a soft tortilla. But honestly, I was vomiting so frequently with anything and everything being a nausea trigger, that so long as I could tolerate it and it stayed down, that's what I ate. The smells from desi food were a nightmare - ugh.

Some people are lucky enough to not have any nausea. Mine started at exactly week 6 and lasted until exactly week 17. It was pretty miserable, let me tell you.

So my main advice is: listen to your body, expect it to do wonky things and be a slave to your hormones if you must. Your system is going through an IMMENSE amount of adjustment and change- stuff will happen and feel weird- just go with it. Do what your body wants you to do and you'll get through it. Don't try and fight it, and remember, there IS no "normal" anymore!

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

Thank You! i go for my first trimester screening next week, read up on it and more i read more it scares me. Any experiences? Advise? words of wisdom?

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

^ you mean the bloodwork or the ultrasound? neither of the two is anything to be scared of. for bloodwork, they just take out like 9 vials and send you off. for the scan, you get to see your little babe!

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

^ I used to read about all the hundreds of things each little bit of info could mean. Nearly scared myself to death. I realized I needed to get off those sites, for my own peace of mind.

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

they are sending me for an early screen of Down Syndrome, I was told its routine. The exam will consist of both blood work and ultrasound. I read online that a lot of ppl get false results and even if they place you in the high risk bucket (since its screening) ppl generally have normal babies, i know for sure if i hear something negative i wont be able to make it though the rest of the 6 months, i am already so worried :(

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

Qiynat...Yes it is a routine screening. And you read right about false positives too.Depending on your age and family history maybe your OB/GYN can guide you better.
When we were expecting we decided not to have this screening test done. Its a totally 100% personal decision. We knew that if God forbid there was a problem we wont want to terminate the pregnancy or go for other tests whose results are actually more accurate (amniocentesis). So we took the chance.
Another thing I learned earlier in my pregnancy was to actually stay away from too much info on teh web.Although it can be very helpful for some,it was just freaking me out every single time.

All the best...Inahsllah...:)

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

I worried my head off too during pregnancy, but then I would make myself look at all the people who are perfectly fine around me. As long as you and your spouse and probably immediate family members are fine, so shall be your child inshAllah.

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

thanks everyone. you are right, i need to stay away from TMI.

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

i had very difficult time in my both pregnancies, bcz of teh morning sickness,n vomitings etc etc,and it was so severe, i had to try different methods to cope wid them....in teh first trimester those who suffers from volmuting n morning sickness can't eat ANYTHING.,..but still we have to eat something...try to take small and frequent meals all day long,in morning before getting up,have some crackers,as theyr dry so they will help in teh sitution....don't eat like u normally do,means don eat till ur stomach is full ,it will make u vomit, eat smaller quantities frequently,my OBGYN gave me a medicine for teh volmiting.and its a blessing in my third pregnancy ritenow... i jus take it before going to bed,and it really works...widout it i can't imagine what i would be doing!!..in teh very begnning doctors gv only folic acid aftar that ,multivitamins, iron etc...eat foods that easily digest...don't take liquids rite after u eat, take some time to avoid volmiting..

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

congrats on your pregnancy :) everyone has given you great advice. morning sickness is a pain but you need to keep your energy levels up, so eat whatever doesn't make you sick. for me cornflakes cereal was easy to keep down and make sure you get your vitamins!

Re: First Trimester experiences and advice

thank you everyone for your advise! i thought i should update you ladies: the test results came back with "very low chances" :) thanks again for the advise.
