It’s great to see minorities in Pakistan playing a bigger and bigger role in Pakistani society these days.

First Sikh traffic police warden says he is proud to be Pakistani

Dr Gulab Singh Shaheen — the first Sikh to be recruited as traffic warden in the City Traffic Police — says he is proud to be a Pakistani and is ready to sacrifice even his life for it. Gulab hails from Nankana Sahib and has settled on Bedian Road near Defence. He completed his graduation from Islamia University Bahawalpur and also holds a diploma (DHMS) in Homoeopathy. Gulab runs a clinic in Sabzazar and two free homoeopathic dispensaries in Nankana Sahib and on Bedian Road. Gulab Singh was born on January 1, 1982 in Nankana Sahib and his number was third among brothers. Talking about his family background, he said that his father was a farmer and he had agricultural land in Nankana Sahib while one of his brothers was working in a sugar mill. He said that after partition his forefathers shifted to the Tribal Areas and in 1965 they returned to Nankana Sahib. He said that he got inspiration from his uncle, Har Charan Singh, who joined the Pakistan Army as a second lieutenant. He said that he wanted to become a police officer and his childhood dream was materialised when he applied for the post of traffic warden and got selected.

He said that his ambition was to make the traffic police a model police force just like the Motorway police and to improve its image. He said that during the selection process, every officer always checked his identity card and in the final interview they asked him questions about religion. He said that after training, he would try his best to serve citizens diligently. Gulab said that all the selected boys were educated and the government had also offered a very good salary package. He said that he had no relatives in India.

Re: First Sikh traffic police warden says he is proud to be Pakistani

Does any one happen to know the size of Sikh community in Pakistan? Which areas of Pakistan is the Sikh community likely to be found?
