First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

Since this was posted so many times in the wrong forum, lets discuss this as it applies to Pakistan! Were the matooz eating halwa when their own tribesmen are doin such things?

A gay couple have become the first to get “married” in Pakistan, according to reports from the region.
Witnesses said a 42-year-old Afghan refugee held a marriage ceremony with a local tribesman of 16 in the remote Khyber region bordering Afghanistan.

Gay marriage is not legal in conservative Muslim Pakistan.

On hearing of the wedding, a tribal council told the pair to leave the area or be killed for breaking religious and tribal “values and ethics”.

‘Pomp and show’

A local Urdu-language newspaper said the elder man, named as Liaquat Ali, had taken a local boy called Markeen as “his male bride”.

The paper said the boy’s impoverished parents accepted 40,000 rupees (£380) for their son’s hand in marriage.

“The marriage was held amid usual pomp and show associated with a tribal wedding,” it said.

Malik Waris Khan, a prominent local politician and former federal minister, confirmed to AFP that the marriage had taken place.

“I checked the report with people in Tirah Valley and they confirmed it,” he said.

Although it remains a taboo subject, homosexuality is relatively common in Pakistan, says the BBC’s correspondent Aamer Ahmed Khan in Islamabad.

Increasingly, gay couples are living together in some of the big cities such as Karachi and Islamabad, but gay marriages remain unheard of, he says.

Pakistani law punishes sodomy with imprisonment ranging from two years to life.

Some Islamic provisions prescribe 100 lashes for the act or even death by stoning.

A gay couple caught having sex were lashed publicly in the Khyber region in May.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

this has been going on for ages covertly, its just that this is (maybe) the first time they have 'declared and formalized it.' From behind the scenes its now on the screen, there isn't much difference except that I am amazed at their (shall I say) boldness, considering that there is every likelyhood of the two being killed for this act.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

I've heard of cases like so in Bannu and taunsa Sharif..but like Minerva said never so brazenly..

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

hmmm.. wen they say marrige.. does that mean the marrige is accepted by the court of law of pakistan.. or they just saying that these guys just had a marrige.. and happen to be gay..

i mean they could just get married and not tell anyone.. would dat make any difference??.. nope.. bt den marrige is a legal contract between man and wife.. in this case man and man..

weird man.. bt still its not a legel marrige.. bt it is pretty disgusting.. wats he gona do wid dat poor guy??.. m sure that poor lill boy had no choice bt to play into this pedophile.. asshole

allah hafiz.. kill the old man..

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

all these gay and lesbo couples must be given death sentenced to make lessonas for others

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

good question cheebu, the marriage couldnt be 'legal' as it's clearly against the laws of the country and the CrPC defines punishment for such acts. Now the other form of a union being decalred a 'marriage' and thus legal in our country and society is by Nikah. Surely that mustnt have happened either...and if a maulvi was rabid enough to unify the two love birds by Nikah, he should be the third one to be stoned.

And as in heterosexual marriages in our rural communities, the parents of the 'bride' offering the hand of their daughter, minor child, and now even son for money is crossing limits.

In posh localities of the country in large cities like Khi, Lhr, Isl, the high n mighty too are involved in such marriages. certain big names from our fashion and sho-biz industry, both males and females being the pioneers of introducing this last bit of 'freedom' into the Pakistani society. homesexuality has always been there, but things like this remove the fear and guilt from such people and make them bold which can be very destructive for a society...

Like Spock said, at times like these, are the mullahs really busy eating the halwa at these very 'weddings'...?

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

It’s not a legal marriage, which is why the BBC report put the word “married” in verted commas and stated that gay marriage is not legal in Pakistan.

This was a Tribal wedding, not a legal wedding.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

They wanted a long term committed relationship....Im sure they are very happy.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

this thread along with the other 4 or 5 seems better placed in society/culture..it's relevance to pakistani politics is a bit dubious to me..

apparently the people in question have already gone underground when the news spread..the supposed nature of the ceremony itself was done unknowing to many of the outsiders involved.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

What is the point of dragging the rich and spoilt (0.0001%) of the population in this discussion? What they do in their private rooms is their business and shouldnt affect anyone since they are not going around beating their drums about it.

To be fair, it would be better if we highlighted this issue from a society in general perspective. Have we forgotten the Peshawer School incident where the teachers for decades had been practicing homosexuality? What happened, nothing. Matter was hushed up cause too many important figures were involved. Child abuse in Madressah’s is a common complaint, yet nothing is done to resolve the matter once and for all, why? Cause it reflects badly upon the religious elite. Remember Mukhtaran Mai? Well it started with her brother being sodomized, does anyone ever wonder why that was never made a national issue? Cause its embarrassing or acceptable?

Digging deeper into this social malaise and you can find male infatutation stories dating back in the Arabian nights or those related to the sub-continent can be traced in exploits of Mirza Ghalib, Josh and many others.

Homosexulatiy has been around for centuries and without physical boundaries, lets not target a small segment of the population cause its easy and popular thing to do.

Who said it’s a GAY marriage??? The old guy is simply a peadophile who bought the poor 16 years old kid from his parents. You can hardly call them gay couple:mad:  . That 42 year old MORON should be hanged in public because i just don’t see a kid at the age of 16 marrying a 42 year old grandpa.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

This is as Bizarre as it can be.

An Afghan refugee establishing himself in Pakistan first, then bringing his ugly henious Afghani tradition of making gay courtships into Pakistani society...

I am pretty sure the boy is not gay himself & if he is forced into this union by his parents for greed,he might one day kill this 42 year old guy in his sleep & would spent rest of his life in one of those Khyber Agency Jails....(A life ruined)....

Secondly...FATA Tribals make much noice on being "Ghairat Mand","Traditional" & "Religious"...

Where did their Ghairat go now????

I hope all those involved in this crime of "Gay Pedophilia" should burn in hell, both in this & the other world.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

^ ghairat comes in handy when someone takes a peek at their women.

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

I hope they live a long and happy life...

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

I don’t know how much is it true and how much fabricated…even if it is true, how can you judge on the basis of one instance…what is your opinion about another issue…i.e. Hera Mandi standing in cotrast to Badshahi Masjid in the land that had to become the Purest place on earth and a center for Holy Muslim values…or BCCI supplying women to Arab Shayukhs…the folk also allowed Mukhataran Mai to be raped by gangsters…

Anyhow, let us see what happens…

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

May be we can say that it is their personal matter...there are things in the nature of humans that can be hushed up but not uprooted.....they should be given one credit at least that they were not hypocritic to conceal it behind false piety....

There are undocumented reports that insist level is quite high in developed urban centers of Pakistan, especially Islamabad...

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

Beghairats!

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

^ LOD....You rather then accepting the problem....trying to compare between what's going on in Islamabad...what's happening in Punjab/mukhtaran mai etc....who is saying these are right either???Accept the "SIN" here....& stop being pakhtun nationalist for a second....this is not a personal issue at all.....

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

I have a question, who asked for Dowery? :konfused:

Re: First Pakistani Gay Marriage in NWFP

You misinterpreted what i wrote…instead of criticising them, we should weigh the implications rationally…if it wouldn’t affect the society as a whole, why condemn it…probably in old days homosexuality was considered sin because it was percieved to weaken the demographic strength of the society/group…
