KARACHI (Reuters) - Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on Thursday blamed the team’s first-round exit from the World Cup on the poor performances of the senior players.
Speaking in front of a committee appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board to evaluate the World Cup debacle, Inzamam said poor batting had led to their early elimination. “He said the senior players had not delivered as expected although the bowlers did their best,” a member of the committee told Reuters.
Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament after they were beaten by hosts West Indies and debutants Ireland in two of their three group-phase matches and Inzamam relinquished his captaincy before flying back home.
Their coach, Bob Woolmer died the day after the Ireland defeat. Jamaican police are investigating his death as a murder.
Inzamam also stressed that the standard of domestic cricket needs to be improved if Pakistan are to regain their stature in world cricket. “He said there was need to have more quality cricket instead of quantity. And unless the domestic structure was improved Pakistan would always struggle to be consistent,” the committee member said.
The committee will also question other players, team officials, journalists and board administrators before submitting its findings in a month’s time.

There will be no meeting on Sunday and the Committee will next meet on Monday when former Test cricketer Shafqat Rana and former Secretary of the Board Col. (retd) Rafi Nasim will present their views before the Committee.
Re: First meeting of Performance Evaluation Committee
This is such a waste of time. Salahuddin, Ijaz Butt have both been Chief Selectors not too long ago - and this is just another round about way of them being brought back into the selection committee. Sallu and Ijaz will conveniently pass the buck onto Bari's selection committee and Inzamam, and kiss up to the PCB so that they get on board the new selection committee. If anyone looks at Pakistan's selectors and Coaches during the last 20 years, you will see that the same people keep coming back in circles and no new faces ever show up in the selectors committees or with the national coaches.
