First Inter-religious marriage in India?

Who initiated it?

I’m specifically asking this from Hindu-Muslim perspective, but again to trace the first one, we can pre-Muslim era?

Was Akbar the first to marry Hindu girl?

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

Don't they teach about Delhi Sultanate, Ghulam, Khilji, Tuglaq, Syed and Lodhi dynasties of Delhi in your national curriculum?

I think, if we take slave ownership, Muhammad bin Kasim and his army might be the first one to take hindu girls as booty.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

They don't teach them in detail. There re random lessons about Razia Sultan, Chand Bibi (I'm not sure about her). But In Pakistan, they normally jump from MBQ to Independence movement (before touching briefly causes for fall of Mughals).

I was not talking about booty, I was talking about marriages between different religions. Did any Hindu ruler married to Muslim girl. before Akbar married Rajput princess or any other incident about a Muslim ruler marrying Hindu girl.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

did you google, @muqawwee123?

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

a hindu king from kerala - cheruman perumal - is supposed to have met the prophet and converted to islam, and established the first mosque in india in the 7th century AD. akbar wasnt born for another 800+ years.

also, muslims in kerala are traditionally called “maplahs” - the word literally means brother-in-law. these were people who showed up on ships for trade, and married local women.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

No. I don’t think google would have much to offer.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

I think now we are moving towards right directions. So first there might be marriages among traders from Arab with local women, but may be marriage would be between Arabs and newly converted Indian. The way Akbar is praised or looked down upon for marrying outside his religion raises a suspicion that it was something new, at least for Muslims. Considering Muslims are only allowed to marry people of book. I think there might have been some fatwa (interpretation) where Hindus have been interpreted as people of book (Gita).

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

dont know about such fatwas, i'd think if there was something like that, india's religious demographics would have gone the way persia's did - but it didnt.

by the time akbar came to throne, north india had popular movements that looked down upon orthodoxy. popular figures like guru nanak and kabir das were doing well openly denouncing both faiths' rigidity, and drawing followers from both sides. i doubt akbar was muslim beyond what was necessary for him to keep power.

Some do respond to its calling.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

I think Alauddin Khilji.

For hindus, It is easy to give daughters but they would not have taken any muslim daughter-in-law as it spoiled Rajput bloodline.

Fazal Tabish speaks in riddles

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

Hmm. Point to be noted. I apologise.

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?

Alauddin Khilji is notoriously infamous in Sindh’s history for the same reason. He wanted to marry Soomro princess, which lead to war. There is a famous Sindhi saying which also confirm your comments about not spoiling Rajput bloodline (Soomras are considered Rajput by some historians)

Re: First Inter-religious marriage in India?
