However when it comes to health conditions running in the family I would take that into consideration but I wouldn’t worry too much if such history isn’t already there.
My rough estimate is that approximately 1/3 of our extended circle have had 1st cousin marriages. If I were to look at abnormalities in their children, I can count at least one from any non-cousin marriage for one in a cousin marriage.

I am of the view that most customs and values in a culture, serve some basic economic/social need. Once it no longer serves that purpose it dies out. UK Pakistani community specially in some areas is really downtrodden. Poor, isolated, ghetto culture and mentality. They had to marry within the community and since it was allowed in Islam, it served their purpose. Among Arabs keeping the resources within tribe and not sharing inheritance was one of the reasons. As these things become less relevant in modern world, cousin marriage is dying out.

I don’t think the west recognises any religious convictions as a scientific fact or base their policy on that.
