First cousin marriages leading cause of disabilities in Pakistani community in UK

Re: First cousin marriages leading cause of disabilities in Pakistani community in UK

When the burden on the government is so much that preventive tests like such are a lot cheaper than treating a patient, then yes, governments have to and must make it compulsory to have genetic screening before allowing marriages. Where countries are providing healthcare, such as UAE (free healthcare for locals) or UK (NHS) then a lot less taxpayer money is being spent on treating patients because less patients are being produced. However, when healthcare isn't free, and the person has to pay for his own doctor's visit then I really don't see countries making such a test compulsory. In such a case the rate of inherited diseases will continue increasing.

That is completely snowballed out of proportion. Children whose parents are not related already face a 3% risk of genetic disorder, in comparison with the 6% figure for children born out of first-cousin marriages, which isn’t much of a spike to worry over.

Oh my

Re: First cousin marriages leading cause of disabilities in Pakistani community in UK

In many cases this has been going on for generations.

Grandparents were cousins, parents were cousins etc etc

There is an increased risk of disease, no doubt.

Not true. People do 'mannat', promise their kid to this shrine and what they do to the kid is fit metal caps on their heads restricting the proper growth of skull/brain etc. The kids end up begging or maintaining the shrine.

I think so but not 100% sure . In the end their shouldn't be any embarrassment since its family and their offsprings health is more important.

At the risk of offending everyone....
may I just ask.... is it really culture/writeen somewhere to marry cousins or something...
I mean if it is not written how come this happen.. and if it has been tradition then why didnt people grow out of it... I am not praising or anything but untouchability as a practice isnt prevalent here now..even among the uneducated lot...

So.. how come this still happen in Pak or any other country.. when it has such consequences...
