I had a similar problem a while ago.(7/8 months) 
With alot of tweaking I finally managed to record video through usb but the quality was downscaled to 320xsomething. So it looked horrible. After some extra research I found out thats its best to buy a firewire cable
At the same time I did a little upgrade and bought a motherboard with integrated firewire connection. :k: Works like a charm
