Doing wudu in the required ways and for the required things is important … but there are many extra add- on features to wudu that either invalidate it or the act we want to do that follows or that enhance it and make the wudu as a complete wholesome experience an ibadah in its own right … I urge you to study the following and ensure all the required things are maintained but also to try to add on features gradually … improving your state of excellence inshaAllah.

1 It is compulsory to**
Do wudu for an act that requires you to have wudu when you are in a state of minor impurity
Do wudu for Salat and Salat-u-Janazah
Do wudu for Sajdah u tillawah
Do wudu for Touching Qur’an - even if it is one ayah
2 It is wajib to
(difference - denying a wajib is not kufr -denying the fard is kufr)
Do wudu for the Tawaf of Ka’bah
3 It is mustahab/mandoub to
Be in wudu before sleep
Make wudu after waking up
Be in a continuous state of wudu - which is to replenish it when you lose it
Re-wudu before each salat
Use the wudu for its intended purpose before doing wudu again
Do wudu after back biting or after telling a lie or after stirring trouble
Do wudu after reciting poetry and after laughing
Do wudu after cleansing dead
Do wudu after carrying dead
Do wudu before the ghusl
Do wudu for a Junab (person who is impure) when he is going to eat, drink or sleep or when doing intercourse again
Do wudu if anger is setting in
Be in Wudu before reading with touching mushaf
Be in wudu for Read/Study/Reporting hadith
Be in wudu for teaching anything
Be in wudu to perform adhan
Be in wudu to do the khutbah
Be in wudu for ziyyarah of RasoolAllah (SAW)
Be in wudu for the wuquf of Arafat - and when doing Sa’ee
Replenish the wudu after eating meat of camel
Replenish wudu when touching a woman/man (nah mehram)
Perform ablution before prayer start time - except ma’lur (excused)
**4 It is acceptable to
**
Do tayyumum instead of wudu if there is not enough time to catch Salat-u-Janazah
Touch a book that contains ayaat only if it contains more words not fromthe Qur’an and when touching it the parts that are not ayaat are touched.
Touch a digital Mushaf as it is not considered touching the mushaf
Recite from the Mushaf if wudu is not in tact, if it is not being touched
Allow another person to assist you in wudu after they initiated the offer for the assistance
5 It is makruh to
Perform 'iqama without wudu in tact
To perform a khutbah without wudu in tact
6 Your wudu breaks if you
Laugh out during Salat
Pass wind, feces, urine or semen
Make intimate contact with own and/or anothers sexual organs
Fall asleep, lying down or leaning
7 Your wudu does not break if you
Fall asleep sitting without support
Eat camel meat
Just accidentally touch - or not in an intimate way the na mehram
Have a chronic/persisting problem related to the matters that cause natural breaking of wudu
8 When performing wudu it is mustahab to
Sit in a high place
Face the Qiblah
Do so without assistance
Not chatter/ hold conversation - restricting speech to du’as only
Combine the niyyah of heart with the tongue
Repeat washing every part
Open wudu with Bismillahi waAlhamdulillah
Recite the actual du’as that are in the ahadith regarding wudu
Drink - the left over water (standing up)
Standing up, facing qiblah, raising right index finger
Recite allahuma ja’alni, min- a-tawabeen, wa ja’alni muttatahireen
9 When performing wudu it is makruh to
Request assistance for doing the wudu
Use more water than we need Circa 1 litre
Use less water than what is needed Circa 1 litre
Smack/splash the water on the face
Engage in worldly talk even replying to salam
Ask for help in wudu
Repeat the masah with fresh water
10 When performing wudu it is required to
Enter the little finger in to the ear hole
And to move any ring on the finger - allowing water underneath
Rinse mouth and drive water in to the nose with right hand
Blow nose with left hand
Say Shahadah - The dual testimony
Ensure all parts become wet - including all hair and at least one drop of water to drip off
Rubbing water only - not splashing it
