islamically are we allowed to find out the sex of the baby from the scans, my mum and aunt say we shouldnt, is that right?

Many scholars agree that there is no harm is finding out the sex of the baby before its born. In my opinion this site outlines it best.

there is NO restriction as such as long as your INTENTIONS are right...after all, **'aamaal bin-niyaat'**** is the main issue! what's the purpose of it? if it's Islamically legal, then tehre is NO problem with that. one good reason is to prepare for the arrival of the baby in terms of buying clothes etc.**

Why do they say you shouldnt find out? I could see a problem with it if the parents find out the sex of the baby to decide whether they want to keep it or not, like how people have an abortion if they find out its a girl. Something like that is definitely wrong. But besides horrible cases like that, most parents just find out because they are curious or to help them prepare for the baby's arrival etc, so what could be wrong with that. You arent claiming to have knowledge about the unseen or claiming to have control over something that Allah SWT decides. So in a way, how is it different from taking a blood test to find out what type of blood you have. And anyways, people know that the results arent always 100% right

There is no problem with finding out and should not be . Aborting a fetus for any reason other than saving the life of the mother is not allowed.
