I feel its always a hit or miss. You could try contracting out a small portion of the job to one that you like (like just the kitchen), and see if its up to par…and if you like it, get the rest done by him.

That is what I had in mind last time but it was mostly a miss. I gave some water pipes work to a contractor and he wanted to rip out the pipes out of walls just so he can create more work for himself. I gave some garbage/cleaning work to another laborer who did just 50% of the agreed work and then wanted to start a quarrel. I’m looking for some reliable contractor who can take on such work with very little supervision.
