I need some advice about finding a thekaydar (contractor) type person to do major renovation work in an apartment in Karachi. My requirement is to find someone who is trustworthy and competent. I tried Olx and newspapers but it seems every other person has become a contractor nowadays so couldn’t decide.
Normally the way to get such work done is no big deal had I been living in the city to keep an eye on day-to-day activities or had such a relative. No one lives at that apartment and I live abroad so I’ll be relying on this contractor for a lot of things.
I shortlisted 6 contractors during my last visit but none of them seemed trustworthy after I met them, except for one but I highly doubted his competence and ability to handle laborers to get the work done. So, I shelved the project for another time.

I feel its always a hit or miss. You could try contracting out a small portion of the job to one that you like (like just the kitchen), and see if its up to par...and if you like it, get the rest done by him.

That is what I had in mind last time but it was mostly a miss. I gave some water pipes work to a contractor and he wanted to rip out the pipes out of walls just so he can create more work for himself. I gave some garbage/cleaning work to another laborer who did just 50% of the agreed work and then wanted to start a quarrel. I'm looking for some reliable contractor who can take on such work with very little supervision.
