CHANDIGARH: India’s rising cricketer Manpreet Gony on Tuesday landed in an awkward situation with his mother leveling a serious allegation against him, saying that the Punjab pacer was threatening to kill her.

Mohinder Kaur told reporters that Gony was being instigated by his in-laws.

“I am pained to tell my plight through media and that too about my own son. Shortly before he left for Asia Cup in Pakistan, Manpreet along with a few of his relatives from his in-laws side came to my house and threatened to kill me,” Mohinder Kaur told reporters at her house in Mohali.

“After the IPL was over and before the Asia Cup, he came to the house and took away his belongings and tried to beat me up,” she further alleged.

Gony, who married a girl outside his caste, has been living with his wife and mother-in-law in Mohali ever since his 16-day old son died over a year back.

“Gony’s mother-in-law is a very greedy woman. She first ousted her husband out of her house in Mohali and now she has put my son under some evil spirits. I do not know what her motto is, but she is spoiling my son and taking him away from me,” Mohinder Kaur claimed.

When asked why she was not lodging a police complaint, she replied, “This will spoil my son’s career”.

Meanwhile, Gony’s wife has refuted all the allegations while her mother-in-law was unavailable for comment. Gony is currently in Pakistan with the Indian cricket squad taking part in the Asia Cup.

**Gony’s tale: Kabhi khushi, kabhi gham

**MANPREET SINGH Gony is a revelation. Not just his cricket, where he’s come out of nowhere to become the Chennai team’s pace bowling spearhead. That, in any case, is well documented and a rare delight in this tournament, which has mostly seen the domination of a slew of big-name Aussies.

What’s also so rare is the candid way in which the 24-year-old Punjab player talks about life, where it’s taking him and why. Behind those model-type good looks, strapping physique and the warrior-style grimaces while he’s bowling, is a rather sad story, one of love and loss.

When you hear it, you can’t help but feel happy for him, for the way he has blossomed under M.S. Dhoni’s captaincy. “I am very happy and it feels good,” says Gony about his IPL experience. “It is a platform and that’s a good thing for me.”

**Despite the promise he holds, there’ll be no one from the media chasing his parents when he eventually succeeds. For him, they’ve ceased to exist. “My wife and my mother-in-law take good care of me,” he begins cautiously and then, almost as an afterthought, adds, “But I don’t share a good equation with my parents because they have thrown me and my wife out of their house.”

His troubles began when he married against his parents’ wishes. “When I would go out of town for cricket tours, my parents would harass my wife. On my return, they would behave as if nothing had happened. My wife would call me up and cry and I found it hard to concentrate on cricket,” says Gony, adding that he wondered what to do.**

“That’s when I told her that we would live separately and #8230; I have not called them (after the IPL success). They did, but I cut the call and #8230;” It was very tough on him initially. One senior Punjab Cricket Association official also said that Gony even had a son during this period. But the baby died between 10 and 20 days after birth.

But Gony says he somehow managed to stay focussed and things started to fall in place. “Somehow, when I started living separately, I started doing well in cricket. I did well in the Deodhar Trophy (this year) and that’s when I started believing I can have a career in this and fend for myself.”

But he says that what he is today, he owes to his wife. Theirs was a beginning that could’ve been found in a Bollywood movie. He caught his wife’s attention when he would pass her house on the way to playing cricket. “I was this tall, broad guy who used to wear white kurtas. Maybe she was impressed by that,” says Gony with a sudden chuckle.

Or perhaps the movie-star looks played a part. Did he ever consider movies or modelling? “Well, I did give it a thought. But I didn’t know how to go about it and in any case, cricket takes all my time.” So what’s next? He aims to “play well and go on to play for India”. And keep his wife happy. “I want to buy a house, provide a good life for my wife. And this (the IPL) is just the
beginning.”
