Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
Is it only in South Asia???
I was reading an article on Brazil and it was written, your social status in Brazil is determined by how white you are.
Brazil had a lot of African descendants. Slavery of African Americans was present in Brazil to a large extent. That's why 'light skin' is associated with the upper-class, whereas darker skin is seen as low class.
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
Lol, Deeba! That's insane.
Also, this lighter skin complex seems to only exist in females. Men who are pale are seen as .. less attractive. Darker skinned men are seen as more desirable.
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin

Nope. Blacks (in Africa and in other countries) are just as obsessed with lightening their skin. So are many darker toned South Americans. If you google and go to any skin bleaching/lightening forum....you'll see many different "groups" represented in this obsession.
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
^ they create their own lines like shiseido white lucent range, the skin food whitening range is common there too! although dont know if skin food is created there.
There is a nivea whitening cream which seems to delivered from korea on ebay.
I was surprised aswell doppleganger
I just thought of something, dont geishas put very white makeup on their face? I wonder what the history behind that is?
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
Yeah, they tend to favour blonde hair and blue eyes but then again with (comparatively) 'darker' models like Adriana Lima they don't photoshop them to look miky white.. Imo they're still a bit more open to different types of beauty than we are..
They do it in reverse fashion. A naturally wheatish Adriana Lima's always duskified and presented as a burnt cookie for lingerie ads which reinforces media's popular representation of dark = dirty/slutty. Thats also not good imo. But I feel VS is getting slightly better they're beginning to accept their models' natural skin tones even if they're at the lighter end of the spectrum.
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
^ Dirty/slutty is the wrong word, IMO.
Darker skin is associated in the fashion world of today as 'exotic'/sexy/beautiful. Dirty/slutty would cause people to stop tanning. No one wants to be slutty.

Geisha's do put white make up on, but it's a lot rarer to find geisha these days, it's a dying trade. Also, they wore it for more than one reason, including lightening skin/covering marks up etc etc. I think that pale skin seems to be treasured everywhere, and I've read about some in the far east who tend to value 'porcelain' coloured skin over the more 'common', yellow skin :/
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
O please, how is it any different than other beauty standards? What about Rogain ad, or teeth whiting ad, or diet pill ads or makeup ads? They all perpetuate ideas of beauty to be desired.

And when I watch Paki TV all the presenters, news readers are also gori chitti. What's up with that? I'd make a pretty hot sanwali tv hostess if I do say so myself.

Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
I think there is some wisdom behind our mothers.
Now I was born and raised here in America, but even I think that typical "Indian color" doesn't look nice.
Sometimes if you want an honest answer you can look to a child. My brother was looking at some pictures of one to two girls for marriage purposes on his laptop (he doesn't want too but was kind of forced just to look), my sisters 4 year old son was sitting with him, and all of sudden he yells out "Mamoo she's too brown" . At that moment my brother started laughing and he deleted the pics (its just wrong to do that).
Now my sister/her husband and their kids are all born in America, and neither have ever even been to Pakistan, there is no Way my sister would have taught him that, she would probably be quite angry if she heard that.
Your being raised in America has zilch to do with your mindset about skin color. Its all in your upbringing. Its as simple as that. What you were taught or shown is what you believe.

This is quite true. Fair = innocence. Dark = Sultry.

Today...and this is not in our South Asian culture either. Its more in the Western. We still find light skin much more attractive than dark.

.
No one taught or showed me anything I was not raised in a typical "Pakistani" home. It's just my preference, ie some people like red cars some people want a blue one. We all have different preferences. Also what about my nephew - no one taught him anything.
Re: FINALLY a good article about south asian obsession with light skin
Also sometimes old people can be like little children, so you shouldn't get mad at what they say or do. Like my Grandma came and stayed with us for about 4 months, and sometimes she would get so mad about the smallest things, and they also forget a lot of stuff, doesn't mean you take what they say seriously or argue with them, their like helpless babies almost, take em out for a drive get em some ice cream and they tend to get happy.
