This question is for electrical/computer engineering people… (5abi et al)
What did you guys do in your final year projects??? What advice would you offer to someone who is about to do it? What area would you recommend, embedded systems, control systems etc??? Also, what kind of project would be appreciated by the industry people these days? I am allowed to work with one other person, and she is an electrical engineering final year student and I am a computer engineering student, so it is important that our project utilizes some electrical engineering aspects as well. Does anyone have any abstracts?
hmm..one thing that might help is websurfing, going into the ce /ee departments pages of different colleges, from there going into the links for the classes, then going into the pages for the senior project class...
those pages prolly have tons of ideas and details abt what students have done in the past etc..
i'm doing senior proj right now too but since i'm computer science [not engng] the emphasis is all on programming..so dont know much abt CE...
here is an idea....
since u have an ee person with u, consider simulating a motion capture system on a UNIX box....have a webcam that can track human motion and follow it and record it....then analyse it....like the distance covered...size of the moving object...speed etc....

it may seem simple but it is not....

Great Idea, thanks, and I know why its difficult... The perspective and distance of the moving object from the camera makes it really difficult indeed.

Thanks for the info irem, but is it possible to give a brief description of what you are doing? Like the abstract or something?
Spock I'm not sure if it'll help coz my senior project is based on programming...but PM me your email address I'll send you the Design Doc and Project Spec of what our group is doing :)

if u need more help on it...check in GIKI archives...a similar project was done by some students 5 yrs ago...not as advanced as this...but it will get u the kickstart...
if you are a cpre major, then working on a proj which relates to embedded systems would be the best option for you.
i myself am planning to take UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) as my senior design project. To give you an idea of what I mean visit Aerial Robotics Competition
btw group of 2 for senior design sounds odd or perhaps it varies from uni to uni.
Well, we just found out there would be three people. The other person can be either an EE or a CE major… Until I find out what I am going to do, I am not making the decision between the two.

Do you know hot to access the GIKi archives? I tried but couldnt find them.
also what do YOu wanna do when you graduate.. any companies you'd wish to join or a particular line of work you're interested in?? It'd help if you do your project related to that.. adds to your resume.. and your own knowledge..
I remember three intelligent EE's who worked diligently on an EE project.. aahhh.. i was the fourth who did nothing but proofread the thesis cuz i had a better command over the English Language than them.... hahah
get used to it spocky.... techies just get bossed around by people with better communication skills or in Finance or both.

don't you have a project advisor or somebody??

Thanks. Well, I have plenty of time, like 5 months before I start on the first phase of the design project (we have two courses, design 1 and design 2)... The designing and proposal is due by the end of the first course... This is why I have not yet talked to any advisors, but will do so soon. As for companies, thats also a good idea, it wouldnt hurt to mail some of the local companies to find out what their input is.
As for comm skills, I can manage that easily. My group partner is someone I have known for a while and she knows her stuff and I am confident both ofu will contribute equally.
well i did my project as an Electrical Engineer, n i had to make the cruise control system on our electro-bike, so i had basically done it thru digital logic system, n it turned out to be perfect as well as a small circuit, could have been better if i had knowledge of a PIC chip, but that was taught in the CpE level, as it would all be done in one chip, wouldnt that be amazing.
ummm nowadays, BlueTooth technology is on the rise, you would wanna do something regarding that, n that could help for both that is Electrical Engineers as well as Computer Engineers, so you would wanna get some idea regarding that communication system.

sounds interesting
was building the electro bike part of the project?

Thanks... You were in WVU right? Everyone there uses PIC chips... Can you tell me something more about it? Is it comparable to those FPGA and CPLD chips, available from Xilinx?
The only problem with bluetooth is that its licensed, so I am not so sure if we can work on it in a senior design project which is being funded by a state. I will try to get in touch with some people to find out whether is it possible for us to do it or not.
I am a NED Graduate BE Computer Systems 1989. We had similar problems at that time. There was no faculty member available who could guide us for the final year project. The problem is that most of our faculty members are not professionals with industry experience with few exceptions. I wish I had been working in the electrical related field. Over the years I have changed my carrer form Computer Engg to Computer Science and now develop customised application.
In my opinion you should NOT select somthing very Hi-Fi. Select a project that has commercial value. It is very important. A very simple project that can add value in our daily life. Just see things around you, may be in your kitchen. Any product can be work as a tool. I have seen many good efforts and hard work done by some very bright students gone wasted. After you get your degree all of your hard will not be useful for nay purpose. I strongly recommed that develop somthing which you can show to a financer at later stage and sell the idea for mass production. I can assure you that there are many financer who have money and looking for differnt products.
The limitation I have is that now I am more focused on software development, Its project management, Quality Management. My mind works on these lines. I can giev you idea about the software product that require little efforts and you can develop product that can be market later.
This is my two cent to help you in your project. WIsh you all the best with your project.
