on April 15. Rameez previews Pakistan’s chances in this much-awaited game and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of each Indian player.
Can Pakistan break their world-cup duck against India? Although Pakistan enjoys a handsome 64-40 lead over India in 108 matches played between the two (4 abandoned), they have lost all four of their previous world-cup encounters against their arch-rivals in 1992, 1996, 1999 and 2003.
On paper, India’s batting is second to none. Apart from record-breaking Tendulkar (most runs - 14,783 runs in 381 ODIs at 44.12 and centuries - 41), they have the most successful (and the most under-rated) bowler in their one-day history - Kumble, 334 wickets in 270 ODIs at 31.05. Pathan has the best bowling average (25.15) of any Indian bowler and Zaheer has been in some sort of form lately.
I still don’t think that their fielding is that good - only marginally better than Pakistan’s, which isn’t saying very much.
Re: Final Analysis: Preview of Pakistan v India Match in super-eight round
I really do not care about favorites and solid teams on paper; it comes down to the match period. I know most pundits make their predictions on basis of players, but seldom they are proven right. Here are some things to ponder; it is always difficult for the runners-up of World Cup to repeat. They always look good on paper and against mediocre teams, but always fail to win big games. Also, calling a team favorites does not help, examples are South Africa in last world and Pakistan (runners up '99) fail to cross first round despite having solid teams. Only Australia of '99 was able to win the World Cup in their next try, even though they had a tough time passing the first round, England of '92 reached final.
Runners-up, winners and favorites do not know that they have a target on their back and no matter what teams they face; they are bound to see their opponents give their level best, especially the minnows for which winning against favorites is winning a World Cup itself. Only Australia has been able to handle the constant target on their back well who is the overall best team since West Indian run, this is because they rely on their team to win rather some players with stats. It is always best to go into World cup with little or no expectations; examples, Pakistan in '92, Sri Lanka in '96, Australia in '99 and India in '83.
