Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, who ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away on Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital here, family sources said.
He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai.
According to the sources, he was on dialysis for the last few years and was undergoing the procedure at least thrice a week. He was on Saturday admitted to the ICU of the hospital.
The actor, who made his debut in Bollywood in 1953, when the film ‘Jeevan Jyoti’ was released, carved out a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee in 1961.
His new image took ground and his subsequent films were all in this genre later.
Shammi Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in ‘Brahmachari’.
**sad news indeed...May he RIP...inna nillahi wa inna ilaihii raaje'oon.
he wasn't a great actor per se, but he was lucky to always have great songs which are still alive. thanx to0 Rafi saab. at Rafi's passing away he himself once said that his 'VOICE' is gone forever and that whatever success he had achieved in Bollywood it was due to Rafi saab. ***i LOVE his songs!*
I saw photos from the funeral and saw pics of his little brother Shashi Kapoor.
Shashi and Shammi were both in the hospital together earlier this year .... looking at Shashi now, you would think he would have gone first .... Shashi Kapoor was so incredibly handsome in his jawani. It made me so sad seeing his recent photos.

**these are the phases of life everyone goes thru both physically and spiritually but unfortunately when we are younger we tend to be naive and are in denial that we will ever get to this point and one day we'll leave this world for our heavenly abode.
in Islam, we are encouraged to go to the graveyard and spend a little time there in order to remind ourselves of our own mortality but again, unfortunately, we go to grave sites for entirely different reasons...to ask the dead man in the grave to fulfill our wishes/desires, legal or otherwise, instead of asking Allah almighty.
***May Allah show us the right path for which we must strive for...aameen*

He was n't that bad an actor although among the Kapoor brothers, Shashi was always my favourite.
true! i felt the same when i saw him earlier at this years some award function.
Shashi kapoor was such a goodlooking guy and had an equally good personality :k:. Really, really sad to see him in such a condition! I know this is life but still nobody wants to see such harsh realities happening around whether to them or even to others.
all the male kapoors are like that. fit and smart when young and fat and sick looking when old.
agree with you except for shashi kapoor reaming all went chubby after certain age.even raj kappor sons and daughters.
anyway sad news,i think in the end shammi died happily without regret.
btw he was one of the first people to bring internet cafe to india around 1994-95 first in mumbai
