Fighters?

It would be interesting to see how many people practice a martial art/arts.

I know it’s not good to boast about martial skills or even give a hint that you know them, but since many of you may want some tips or just basic advice i’ll gladly help out in whatever way i can.

I’m not going to bother too list my abilities becuase it will be too long. Besides you guys will know soon enough how much i know.

Oh and when i say martial art, that litteraly means any art used in warfare. It doesn’t neccasarily have to be oriental, like Jackie Chan stuff.
technically it could be any form or style mainstream or unique. So for example boxing, fencing, archery, tent pegging (i love this one!) anything.

Also please let us know why you do it, how long youve been doing it?
No need to say wether any style or techniques good/bad as this may offend practioners. All i want is to know who among us is a fighter? It will give us a surprise i’m sure, as well as allow us to share knowledge on a much dilluted subject.

So fire away.

Re: Fighters?

why don't you start off by giving a little tip for people like me who has never done it?

Re: Fighters?

^you fight in cafe all the time.

Very well, sister.

For starters it helps you achieve a level of fitness far quicker and far stronger than most other sports.

One thing i always keep in mind in a decent fighter is that it's not just about beating something up but proving you can take a beating and keep on going.

It works wonders for stress relief, and anyone can take part from five to a hundred and five year olds. If the art has a mystic side to it then it will help you as a spiritualist person.

For those of you need a confidence boost it will help too.

And if you just want to be tough then therea re some arts for you but i personally don't favour the bully attitude.

Some arts are very complex and can be a mental as well as physical challenge.

Best thing to do as a starter is ask yourself what you want out of it?

Fitness? a deadly skill? the ability to walk with confidence (no fear)? Or just to have a lower heart rate or bust some calories.

Some people say that martial arts are for macho tough guys who just want to beat people up. But some artists are among the most gentle folks you will ever meet.

It's becuase they know that if they use thier skills in full anger then the results will be terrible. in fact becuase they know about the effects of battle they are among the least likely to rush into a fight and tend to remain calm even in the most intense melee, while those that see themselves as tough guys usually run when confronted by a superior skilled opponent who not only understand show to beat the bad guys but also knows when to walk away or dodge or in some cases move fast and stop a fight before it even begins.

It will also help you in the most unusual of circumstance. For example sometimes thugs shake your hands too tight to make you feel weak in front of them. If you could grip them and threaten to break thier hands if they ever dare try such a move on you again then 9 out of ten times they will give it up.

However i'll not give away anything which could be used for alterior motives. I just wanted to talk with like minded folks

Well to be honest i'm into anything and everything. I had a grandfather who was from a time when hand to hand combat was the call of the day. His name was Shakaar Hussain, he was a true warrior and practiced the little known Indian martial art of Gatka.

Personally i hav spent my lifetime since i could first walk, in learning every combat art i can. For me it's about being able to beat any opponent in any scenario. I dont practice a "pure art" like Kung Fu or karate.

I mix my arts together a bit like MMA. the idea being that i am equiped with a host of techniques and skills to counter whatever comes my way. I am fammiliar with a lot of Martial arts too many to name.......

Kung Fu (both Northern and Southern styles), Muay Thai/Muai Boran, Kalapataryu, Turkic wrestling, Jujitsu, Judo, Krabi Krabong, Penckack Silat, Escrima...... these are just a few of them.

I also mix these with weapons arts, as well as groundfighting which has to be my favourite style.

I'm currently perfecting Muai Thai, but i would highly recomend the little known art of San Soo Kung Fu for self defense.

San Soo is an awesome style of fighting suited to anyone.

Weapons arts are too complex to even mention. Though i regard Tae kwon do with great admiriation i have only trained in it briefly, it suits more agile people becuase of it's extremely flexible kicks.

I prefer heavier arts now beucase although i'm not too heavily built i'm suffering from skinnyness. I cannot fight a large oponnent with Tae kwon Do beuase the moves are not as damaging or as easy to land on a skilled oponnent. A roundhouse kick for example can cripple an attacker, but landing one takes too much carefull timing and precise movements. A streetwise enemy can detect one coming much easier than a simple shin kick.

Therefore the focus on me is to increase the power of even a simple move like a shin kick, here conditioning is the key. If you train yourself hard enough you can deliver crippling blows with even a simple move. The idea is also to use your full body wieght behind each blow. A small 90lb lightwieght can still crippple a 150lb heavy if he puts a kick or punch in with a force equal to his body wieght.

Anyway you get the picture.
