hey everybody!!
i have a chance to go to either in computer software engineering OR computer engineering…
please help me which one should i do.?? also which will be having more career options??? i am a girl btw…
n if i do computer engineering i will be doing it from EME college…and for software i will be joining MCS…
where should i go?

these two terms are a little confusing for students.. when i was at ur stage i went for software engineering just because it sounded good.. lolz..
Software engineers basically deals with the development of the software and they have to work on the intricate details of the software development and design sometimes.. and i also believe that they also are better testers. The syllabus of the degree includes all the software design concepts, software languages, software architecture, software quality assurance, and many many more courses..
The computer engineering, like everybody believes is more hardware oriented.. like understanding the hardware related softwares like OS and device drivers. Designing the h/w probably.. and i think they are taught more of electical engg as well.. thats all i know.. lol
From a girls point of view i think software engg suits us for some reason.. but in the end its ur choice altogether!

thanx yaar!! i am just a lot confused at the moment about making choices lol nust wale hinted me that i am gonna be in the army wali selection list.....so i had to make a choice in mind...
i guess i shall be sticking with my old software obsession just cause even i thought it sounded more good lol

Another side to computer engineering is dealing with the design of applications from start to finish - what hardware to use, how the app should be designed to run best, analyzing exisiting applications to make them run more efficiently, figuring our how to merge applications ie., when a company merges with another and although their applications and data are different they now need to be merged.
This career has much potential for upward mobility esp for a woman because there are so few who enter this field.

it depends on your interest, if you like logic gates, IC chips, circuits and devices and have good maths and physics and interest in solid state, then go for comp engineering. if you however like the softer side of computers, as it also offers, analysis, design and overall system level design of a give business problems without getting into too much details of hardware components. then choose the software engineering.
and sleepy mods move this thread to career, though its related to someone's life but not relationship unless you consider computers as soul mates ;)

amorox: i think the question you should be asking yourself is why you want to do either one of them? What's your long term plan?
Many times, I have seen students pick a major based on "jobs available in market" and that is a wrong parameter. Jobs can come and go, but you must enjoy what you are going to study and pay a lot of money for that degree. So think about what you want to and then decide which field suites you better.
Both fields are very much a like, computer engineering will give you a bit more insight into the hardware but that's about it..

There's plenty of software engineering jobs, both in Pakistan and abroad, and many desis are into it here. However, computer 'design' engineering is more challenging, pays a lot more but sadly you'll have a hard time finding jobs in Pakistan because we really dont have any hardware design going on there. The latter also forms a nice amalgam between computer science, electrical and electronics engineering. I've been working as a design engineer for over 4 years now and enjoy what I do, and it pays really well, so turned out to be a good investment in addition to being a challenging yet interesting career choice. It also opens you up for the world of mechatronics, which is also another major you might want to consider and is offered at EME. I believe you should go talk to Dr. Akhter Nawaz, the HoD there for some guidance counseling.
If you like embedded systems, and have a sound background in the basics of electrical engineering, I would recommend EME College. I was lucky enough to have qualified for the NUST merit test (the civilian one which is really challenging) back in the day after Alevels and attended both MCS and EME briefly, though I ended up going abroad for college. I found the Electrical & Mechanical Engineering College (EME) to be much better in pretty much all regards compared to the Military College of Signals (MCS). GIKi also offers a good computer engineering program.

i also need to ask that which one has a more strict mahol?? like you know very strict environment n all??? eme or mcs???
i dont want to go into a university thats like hell on my head........n i end up banging my head....i did alevels from roots........mashallah scored straight As......but didnt clear nust test since i didnt study for it :P anyhow
oh and about dr akhter nawaz he happens to be a great pal of my dad.......so umm actually what he told my dad was to send me to eme......because HE will be there.....he wont treat me as just another student m more like a dost ki beti to him.....i hope you getting my point??
n i wanted to do aeronautical always :( but m way too short for airforce and there is no other way i can do any thing in aeronautical from pakistan without getting into airforce...
so ........ just have to pick from one of these fields........ hmmm
