so My mum had an appt today and she has fibroids in her uterus…they are saying that they dont think they are dangerous and to just leave it how it is, but coz mum is complaining of painful and heavy periods what they could do is clean up inside and just shave off any fibroids…any one had this done? did it help?
Another option he said was to put a coil in (like the contraception one) coz that would stop her having periods and would also shrink the fibroids due to the hormones…any one had experience of this? any good?
Your help would be very much appreciated before my mum decides what to do…
a person in my family suffered with fibrois for a very long time.
she had at least two procedures/surgeries where these were removed.
apparently it did lighten the flow but the scar tissue created other complications.
I am not familiar with the minute details so I would recommend that you ask the doctor about what complications can occur as a result of removal.
Salam TabuB, fibroids are usually benign but relatively common growths occurring in the uterus. They often resolve by themselves after the menopause (as oestrogen levels fall). If they are causing problems, the options you have mentioned would be to insert a mirena coil (containing a progesterone derivative which is shown to lighten heavy periods) or surgery. I am not sure which type of surgery has been suggested to you. However, a myomectomy is where they will just remove the fibroids but there is often a chance of reoccurrence of the fibroids. Other surgical options would be endometrial ablation (where they remove the lining of the womb) or in severe circumstances a hysterectomy.
Your dr should have a good idea of what the best treatment is depending on the exact size and location of the fibroids.
Finally some responses...thank you my gupshup friends :) and thank you for all the duas for my mummy, they are very much appreciated...yup its the mirena coil the Dr recommended...she still has time till menopause-another 4-6 years he reckons so he said that the best way forward would be the shaving off of fibroids and then the coil and that should stop the periods for next few years...the hysterectomy would be a last option i reckon as thats quite a big op....doesnt make sense to do that just for heavy periods and pain i guess...
