fibroid

does having a fibroid affect your chances to conceive?

Re: fibroid

Fibroids can affect your ability to conceive. It also depends upon the type, site and location of fibroids. They can also sometimes miscarriage if too large.

In many cases fibroids can be successfully removed or abladed and hence fertility can be restored. This may not be possible in very large fibroids.

Consulting with a gynaecologist with expertise in uterine surgery may be advisable.

Hope this helps.

Re: fibroid

1) Let's say that a woman who has large fibroid/s conceives. At that point is there anything that can be done to prevent a miscarriage from happening? Can the fibroids be removed while being pregnant?

2) I've heard that fibroids can still develop even after being surgically removed/abladed. So, what causes the fibroids and what measures can women take to prevent them from occurring...or to prevent reoccurrence? To my limited knowledge, maintaining a healthy weight and and diet and especially avoiding sugar help. And apart from that there are natural remedies as well such as castor oil packs, or taking serrapeptase to destroy the fibroids. Acupuncture is said to be effective for some medical conditions esp fibroids so OP can look into that as well as an option.

Re: fibroid

1- Many women with small fibroids or those not affecting the lining of uterus (mucosal) will conceive and successful pregnancies, but in some cases they may cause problems with implantation of fertilised embryo or cause miscarriage in 1st or 2nd trimester. Surgery is not usually indicated once a women has fallen pregnant. It is usually carried out once pregnancy has ceased to avoid miscarriage as a complication of pregnancy.

2- A fibroid is essentially thickening of uterine muscles and their growth is stimulated by female hormones, hence they regress after natural or artificial menopause (drug induced). They are extremely common (up to 20% of women) and most will not have any symptoms like discomfort, bleeding, bladder issues or sub-fertility. Treatment usually depends upon symptoms and includes weight loss, oral contraceptive, intrauterine contraceptive, medicines to cause artificial menopause (GnRH analogues) removal of the thickened muscles (myomectomy) or complete hysterectomy, whether from abdominal or vaginal route.

Myomectomy or laser ablation may be an option for women who want fibroid removal to improve fertility and not want to have hormonal suppression or total surgical hysterectomy.
