same applies to the difference between coax and fiber optic. Fiber's initial cost is too high for regular companies to come up with it thats why google had to jump in and its only in 3 US cities. Coax is what comcast has and is all over the US. Coax' speed is getting better though. I now have 150MB down.
I cant wait to get google fiber in my city or move to a city with google fiber (thats right, I am willing to move just so I could get google fiber)

i might be wrong, but its not that the initial costs of fiber is high - the initial costs of establishing any network infrastructure are high, is a very extensive project in time to lay down necessary cabling, repeaters etc. coax cables are more expensive than fiber optic cables, significantly so if you average it down by bandwidth supported.
however, coax cable networks exist in the US since decades and continue to yield revenue for near-zero investment. there is no significant economic benefit for the ISPs as yet to replace them.however if you are laying down network infrastructure in say a third world country with no existing cables, makes no sense - economic or otherwise - to go with coax. fiber is the future.
bottomline - if we werent already tethered to a coax network that gets ISPs regular and healthy subscription revenues for doing next to nothing, we'd have had fiber by now.

True but even if we didnt have coax cable laying around all over it would be expensive to build new infrastructure and hence the cost.

I have fiber at home with Verizon FIOS, I paid $150of installation and about $110/mth for triple play, 100mbps up and down speed. Loving life!
