Fertility Treatment & Work

Would you tell your work/office/employer that you are or will be starting fertility treatments?

Would they treat your absences as a vacation or sick days? What would be fair? I could think that many employers think that having fertility treatment is a not a medical leave (like cancer treatments) but an optional one.

What would you tell your manager and/or colleagues to explain your absence?

Re: Fertility Treatment & Work

yep at our work doc's appointments are deducted from the sick time!

Re: Fertility Treatment & Work

luckily most of my appointments for treatment were scheduled at 7:30am.

although when i was going to the hospital for check ups every two weeks when i was pregnant, some people at work were complaining that i was putting it under appts instead of sick. apparantly, if the appointments are for a 'recurring reason' then it has to go under sick leave.

Re: Fertility Treatment & Work

Its best to speak to an HR proffessional in regards to whether time off would count as sick or not. As for telling my manager, I just told him I was going to be having frequent doctors appointments due to on going medical monitoring. He did not ask for details, but if he did I would have been okay with explaining.

I did make sure that I had someone cover for me during. I did make sure that when possible my appointments were early in the morning or later in the afternoon so I would be a little late or leave a little early as opposed to having the appointments during the afternoon and missing a big chunk on the work day.
