From minah's link:
It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a midwife: "Reduce the size of the clitoris but do not exceed the limit, for that is better for her health and is preferred by husbands". The hadith indicates that circumcision is better for a woman's health and it enhances her conjugal relation with her husband. It’s noteworthy that the Prophet's saying "do not exceed the limit" means do not totally remove the clitoris.
Ranjhan - If you read what I had derisively picked out earlier about the 'benefits' of such a thing, the example they gave was one of clipping the clitoris (in hot areas, it growing too big and other nonsense). Before you continue with this argument, please do some actual reading on the female anatomy and find out exactly what those areas are that are being clipped. Believe me, if the end is clippped just a little, it is still FGM. The hood is the only area where I could see it being halfway humane and equal to a male's circumcision. But even then, this being done at puberty without anesthsia is inhumane. The hood should be done at the same time as a boy or not at all.
You don't see parents lining their boy's up at 13 or 14 to have them circumcized without anesthesia. Think about it.
You would think that the internet is not the best place for an Islamic verdict. You want someone (dunno who) to come out and take a stance? Why?? This is a non issue. There is no sahih hadith or Quranic support for such a ludicrious practice. Yes, some do practice it in Africa and ME but in no way should that be mistaken as an Islamic obligation.
TY Sarah, I read through that. Makes Ranjhans posting seem a bit like stirring trouble since he posted in that one, too
skhan - I know that the internet is not the best place and I also know it is not an Islamic obligation, but it is also not condemned when people practice it in the name of Islam either. It is tolerated, if not practiced.
As I explained earlier I don't know how all the rules Muslims follow are decreed or decided or whatever but on issues like this where the practice is overlooked or tolerated (tolerated meaning saying that there is nothing against it and that it is the decision of the father), it continues.
You know, Allah (swt) blessed us women with a body part solely for physical pleasure. Men got jealous and enraged by it, so they decided to cut it off. My theory :)
If every wrong doing by a Muslim had to be condemned there wouldn't be much time left for anything else? It's a cultural practice, just like incest is in some parts of America. It has been condemned and as you can see even in this thread, very few agree that Islam has anything to do with it.
Minah – female circumcision has no basis what so ever in Islam. I have never heard it related to Islam in all my life. All I know is that its a cultural practice which is against Islam.
Nothing in Hadith or Quran as far as I know.
How can it be condoned or allowed when it has no basis for the religion?
