L’Oréal USA for Women in Science Fellowship programme

The L’Oréal USA for Women in Science Fellowship programme will award five
grants of $20,000 each to third and fourth year graduate students and
postdoctoral researchers who are pursuing studies and research in the
Natural Sciences (biological and physical), Engineering, Computer Science
and Mathematics.

Applications for 2004 fellowships must be submitted on or before November
1, 2003

AWARD

Five grants/stipends of $20,000 will be offered for one-year terms only.
Candidates will be permitted to attain matching grants or supplemental
fellowship grants. The U.S. Fellowships may not be deferred nor renewed.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The L’Oréal USA for Women in Science Fellowship programme is opened only to
women in their third or fourth year of graduate studies, enrolled in a
doctoral program leading to a PhD or ScD, and postdoctoral researchers.

Citizenship: Applicants must be United States citizens; plan to become
citizens by the time the awards are announced; or are permanent resident
aliens of the U.S.

Graduate Study, Field and Degree: Fellowships will be awarded to applicants
pursuing degrees or planning to engage in research studies in the Natural
Sciences (biological and physical), Engineering, Computer Science and
Mathematics.

Graduate students and Postdoctoral applicants must be planning to pursue
their field of study or advanced research at a non-profit institution in
the United States.

Fellowship Awards will be announced in late March of 2004.

CRITERIA FOR REVIEW
A panel comprised of scientists, mathematicians and engineers, all members
of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) will review all
applications. The top 20 candidates selected by this panel will then be
forwarded for final selection to a distinguished jury of former
L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science North American Laureates (women in the
life and material sciences), who will review and select five fellowship
award recipients based on:

o Intellectual merit/Academic records/accepted requisites for scholarly
scientific study:
o Ability to plan and conduct research
o Ability to work as a team member or independently
o Ability to interpret and communicate research findings
o Scientific excellence and appropriateness of proposed research or a
clearly articulated plan of study
o Letters of competence are required from the advisers for postdoctoral
researchers
o Graduate students will require a letter of endorsement/support from
their current adviser.
o The choice of host institution (postdoctoral students)
o The potential for career enhancement

ADMINISTRATION OF FELLOWSHIP FUNDS
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) will administer the schedule of
payment to the fellows.

Isn't this gender discrimination?

imho i dont think it is...imho its kinda like affirmative action

coz u wont find too many women engineering phd's

so this will encourage those who atleast want to do it
